Description for Candidates:

  • Plan and coordinate the archaeology, architectural history, and, or historic engineering components of VDOT's regional statewide cultural resource programs for a defined geographic area.

    How you will contribute:
  • Coordinate Findings: Coordinate archaeological or historic architectural findings with district document and permit staff ensuring project-level consistency with federal and state legal and regulatory requirements, policies, and procedures. Provide written comments to the Preservation Program Manager for SERP, issuance of required permits, and archaeological or architectural resources within the area of potential effect (APE) for the environmental document within required timeframes.
  • Inter-Agency Coordination: Perform inter-agency coordination of significance evaluations, effect determinations, and treatment and mitigation measures in accordance with federal and state environmental laws, regulations, policies, procedures, and inter-agency agreements.
  • Other Duties as Assigned: Provide cultural resource component for environmental training. Perform other assigned tasks as necessary. Perform miscellaneous administrative and other responsibilities. Maintains project files.
  • Project Planning: Coordinate archaeological or historic architectural findings with VDOT staff. Advise design programs on appropriate measures to avoid or minimize harm to significant archaeological or historic architectural resources on routine projects.
  • Proposal Coordination: Prepare written requests for proposals and send to Central Office. Review consultant proposals, archaeological or architectural studies for negotiation or comment. Arrange consultant access with property owners for evaluations, mitigation, treatment and document efforts.
  • Resource Identification: Conduct field reviews and survey to identify and evaluate significant archaeological or architectural resources.
  • Review Coordination: Coordinate the review and analysis of transportation projects to determine what effects may occur on significant archaeological or architectural resources. Apply cultural resource management principles and techniques in the identification and evaluation of significant archaeological or architectural properties, assessment of effects, and determination of appropriate treatment and mitigation measures.
  • Task Order Coordination: Coordinate the development, negotiation, and implementation of consultant task orders involving archaeology or architectural history. Determine acceptability of completed studies in accordance with task order requirements and professional standards.

  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with internal and external customers.
  • Ability to resolve environmental engineering problems as they relate to cultural resource issues relative to transportation.
  • Knowledge of and ability to interpret a wide range of federal and state transportation, environmental, and cultural resource statutes, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the Commonwealth's cultural resources.
  • Skill in the use of computers and software applications.

  • Minimum Qualifications:
  • Ability to apply technical and scientific principles to the management of cultural resources in transportation projects.
  • Ability to resolve complex environmental engineering problems and offer logical solutions.
  • Degree in architectural history, history, archaeology or related field.
  • Knowledge of federal and state transportation, environmental, and cultural resource statutes, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Skill in the use of computers and software applications.
  • Valid driver's license.

  • Additional Considerations:
  • Project management experience with a transportation focus in applying technical environmental principles and practices related to cultural resource management.
