The University of Virginia Department of Anesthesiology is seeking a Vice Chair of Education. The University of Virginia has a rich history and reputation for outstanding undergraduate and graduate medical education programs. The department boasts a vibrant core residency program with over 60 residents and nationally known fellowship programs in intensive care, chronic pain, and regional anesthesia and acute pain medicine. Additionally, the department is involved extensively in undergraduate medical education with faculty participation and leadership in the simulation center, on the admissions committee, on the curriculum committee and in several pre-clinical courses.
At a minimum, this open position requires the applicant to meet the established criteria for the rank of Associate Professor or above at the University of Virginia and have significant experience in leading an academic anesthesia department’s educational missions, preferably as a program director. An advanced degree or experience in broad healthcare education science is desirable. This position will report directly to the Chair. Duties to include the following:
Develop, maintain, and optimize robust departmental educational programs designed to advance the knowledge of all members of the UVA’s Department of Anesthesia in matters related to:
1) clinical care
2) patient safety, quality improvement, and adverse event reporting
3) research
4) educating and providing feedback to others
5) professional development
6) justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion
Develop, maintain, and optimize a robust, objective and consistent mechanism for faculty, fellows, residents, and students who rotate within the department to provide one another feedback on their experiences in our learning environment(s) and/or on role-specific performance as it relates to pre-determined/defined expectations.
Provide high-level oversight to all departmental graduate medical education programs including the core residency, the chronic pain fellowship, the regional anesthesia and acute pain medicine fellowship, and the critical care medicine fellowship programs.
Provide high-level oversight to all departmental undergraduate medical education programs.
Partner and collaborate with the Chair and Vice Chair of Faculty Affairs and Development to develop, maintain, and optimize a robust departmental educational program that serves to ensure that our faculty have the knowledge base and skills to be the best medical educators.
Partner and collaborate with the Chair and Vice Chair of Faculty Affairs and Development to develop and communicate departmental faculty performance expectations relative to our educational missions.
Partner and collaborate with the Vice Chair for Clinical Operations to advance the department’s delivery of high-quality and safe care through innovative education programs.
Partner and collaborate with the Chair, Executive Vice Chair, and Vice Chair for Clinical Research to optimize and advance departmental education research.
Provide executive departmental leadership to the department’s Education Research Group.
Serve as a member of the Department’s Executive Leadership team.
Participate and provide the chair and/or individual faculty feedback ad-hoc and during annual faculty performance reviews on faculty performance relative to meeting departmental faculty education expectations.
Deliver quality clinical care.
Provide medical supervision of residents and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists.
Teach fellows, residents, and students.
The department commits to provide the Vice Chair of Education the support to be successful in delivering upon all of the above roles and responsibilities.
