    About the Department: 

    The organizational objective/mission for the Film and Video Studies program is 1) offer courses leading to a BA in Film and Video offering concentrations in directing and producing, production and post-production (cinematography, editing, and sound), and screenwriting; 2) coordinate (and co-coordinate) a series of public film screenings, student showcases, and visiting artist speakers series; and 3) support a cohesive faculty and staff to carry out objectives 1 and 2.

    About the Position:

    The Part-Time Equipment Cage Supervisor is a non-student wage position responsible for supporting and building our video production equipment rental program. The Equipment Cage Supervisor is responsible for training student workers as well as demoing equipment to film students during equipment checkout.

    As part of the Film and Video Studies Program’s technical staff, the Equipment Cage Supervisor will also be responsible for supporting program events, including the Visiting Filmmakers Series, Production Fairs, and the Mason Film Festival.

    The Equipment Cage Supervisor will also help produce video training materials to augment the technical training that students receive during in-class instruction.

    This position is ideal for individuals interested in maintaining an active freelance career in the film and television industry, and also developing the next generation of filmmaking professionals.

    Responsibilities:

    Equipment Cage:

    • Help manage and coordinate 1000+ pieces of video production equipment for 200 students producing 150 films per year; and
    • Support classroom instruction of equipment by ensuring faculty have proper equipment needed for class.

    Event Support:

    • Provide event support for the Visiting Filmmakers Series, the Production Fair, and the Mason Film Festival. This can include, but is not limited to, AV support to screen films/clips, event recording and photography, and other production duties as assigned.

    Training Support:

    • Support the technical staff’s production of program training videos aimed at augmenting and reinforcing technical skills that students are learning in the classroom. This includes drafting scripts, providing production support, and developing ideas for future content; and
    • Train student support staff in equipment cage processes, policies, and best practices, as well as develop their understanding of the equipment they support.

    Other duties as assigned

    Required Qualifications:

    • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience;
    • 2+ year(s) of freelance experience working in technical on-set roles (particularly in the camera, lighting, and/or sound departments);
    • Ability to articulate advanced production concepts in easy-to-understand demonstrations and lessons; and
    • Must be able to lift/move 50lbs.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Experience working in television production, independent film production, in production and post-production roles;
    • Demonstrated experience in live event production; 
    • Membership in WIFV (Women in Film and Video), TIVA (Television, Internet, and Video Association of DC), VPA (Virginia Production Alliance), and/or DCS (Digital Cinema Society); and
    • Experience working with colleagues from diverse backgrounds.
