About the Department:

The George Mason University Department of Mechanical Engineering is a relatively newer department with vibrant undergraduate and graduate educational activities and research laboratories.

About the Position:

The Life Sciences and Engineering Building (LSEB) Instructional Technician provides expertise in advanced manufacturing in support of LSEB instructional laboratories and machine shop activities.

Responsibilities:

This LSEB Instructional Technician will be the resident expert in the department for CNC machining, lending support to students, faculty, and staff.  Additionally, they will support equipment maintenance, via in-house repair and/or working with external service contractors for routine or emergency maintenance of instructional and laboratory equipment.

  • Leverages advanced manufacturing technologies, including Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machining equipment, in support of instructional laboratories in the LSEB, as well as provides assistance to students, faculty, and staff needing CNC machined or additively manufactured parts; 
  • Supports laboratory and machine shop equipment maintenance, through direct repairs or working with service contractors for routine and emergency maintenance;
  • Provides electronics expertise to student teams designing and building mechanical systems and/or in repair of equipment in LSEB instructional laboratories; and
  • Other related duties as required/assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent;
  • CNC tool experience; exposure to and enthusiasm for work with CNC tools;
  • Exposure to and enthusiasm in working with additive manufacturing equipment (3D printers, filament extruders, etc.);
  • Equipment repair experience;
  • Advanced manufacturing knowledge; and
  • Ability to work with a wide range of experience levels (e.g., supporting students, faculty, and staff).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Vocational or technical training in related field;
  • Preferably 3-5 years experience working with CNC tools;
  • Electronics work experience;
  • Computer aided design (CAD) experience; and
  • Experience working with undergraduate students.
