Founded in 1970, SVCC is one of 23 institutions within the Virginia Community College System. Our service region—the largest in the state—covers roughly 4,200 square miles. Southside Virginia Community College, a comprehensive community college, is seeking full-time 9-month faculty member for Welding on our Daniel Campus; Keysville,VA, service area. The successful candidate must be committed to our mission to provide quality education to a diverse constituency.

Responsibilities are but not limited to:
  • Providing classroom and hands-on lab instruction in welding for various ages including high school students enrolled through the dual enrollment program
  • Preparing for class and scheduling 10 hours of scheduled office hours outside of class
  • Faculty may be expected to teach in multiple instructional settings and at various times, including nights and weekends, to meet student needs
  • Advising and mentoring students to support their academic success, skill development, and career readiness
  • Overseeing lab maintenance and operation
  • Maintaining equipment inventory
  • Developing and evaluating instructional materials and learning outcomes to continually improve the educational experience for students
  • Communicating effectively with students and staff
  • Creating engaging lessons with technology and interactive materials to enhance classroom learning
  • Participating in college committees, meetings and workshops
  • Collaborating with colleagues within the same discipline to coordinate class schedules
  • Representing the welding program at recruitment events to encourage community interest and student enrollment
  • Supporting institutional advancement by strengthening and expanding the welding program
  • Maintaining active communication with a well-rounded advisory committee to remain informed about current trends and developments in the welding industry
Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Advanced certificate, diploma or degree in welding
  • AWS Certified Welder or equivalent certification
  • Must possess welding certifications or have the ability to obtain welding certifications prior to start date
  • Knowledge of and experience in various types of welding and cutting processes, welding theory, metallurgy, and mathematics
  • Proficiency in reading blueprints, welding symbols, and fabrication drawings
  • Current certifications, or certifiable, in SMAW, GMAW and GTAW structural plate and pipe tests
  • Demonstrated commitment to enforcing shop safety protocols and maintaining a clean, OSHA-compliant lab environment
  • Experience in maintaining and troubleshooting welding equipment and shop tools
  • Experienced in using welding simulators
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a culturally and educationally diverse student population
  • Experienced with software applications, including Microsoft Office and Google Suite
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • An understanding of the community college environment and the mission

Additional Considerations:

  • Knowledge of and experience in individualized instruction and hands-on application preferred
  • Teaching experience preferred
  • Teaching experience at the high school, community college, or technical training level preferred
  • AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) and/or Certified Welding Educator (CWE) Preferred
  • NCCER Instructor Certification preferred
  • Experience with online education preferred
