Germanna Community College is a public, open access institution of higher education in the Virginia Community College System. The College is a dynamic learning organization that serves as a Germanna regional leader and preferred partner where quality learning experiences enable students to participate effectively in the social, economic, political, intellectual, and cultural life of their communities. Germanna Community College is centrally located in Fredericksburg, VA between Washington D.C. and Richmond and between the Blue Ridge mountains and the Chesapeake Bay. Full of history, the area offers a community rich with diversity, the arts, technology, vineyards, hiking, canoeing/kayaking, and many other activities.
Germanna is currently seeking a temporary part-time Academic Advisor (20-25 hours per week) to support its REACH Collaborative grant award and Title III grant award. The REACH Collaborative grant supports Germanna’s activities to build academic pathways for adult learners of color into high demand, high wage occupations. The advisor will work within the Office of Equity Advancement using a caseload management approach and will serve as the point of contact for students supported through this grant. The person hired for this position will provide academic support, maintain program records of interventions and services used to assist students, support students' engagement with other Germanna services like tutoring, financial aid, Germanna Cares and the Career and Transfer Center. The ideal candidate for this position should be enthusiastic about student success, a team player, comfortable talking with adult learners, maintaining student confidentiality, and familiar with supporting tasks with immediate timelines. This part-time wage position is grant funded through June 30, 2023.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Assist students nearing the completion of their academic or workforce credentials
Maintain records of advising sessions and student performance
Discuss career and educational goals with students
Advise individuals regarding current and future learning and career goals
Identify student strengths and weaknesses
Refer students to appropriate specialized staff for services such as tutoring, testing, counseling, or financial assistance
Demonstrate a strong understanding of institutional policies
Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisor

Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or a comparable combination of education and work experience
- Ability to understand and adhere to policies, procedures and resources
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office products, typing, web browsers
- A desire to help students realize, understand and reach their educational or career goals
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Strong written and oral communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bilingual (Spanish)
- Knowledge or experience educational management software like Student Information System
- Understanding of academic and workforce programs
