The G3 Advisor positions work closely with potential, new, returning, and currently enrolled students to identify career pathways in academic programs that match their interests, skills, and long-term goals. Advisors serve as comprehensive resources who assist individuals in overcoming both academic and non-academic barriers that may affect their ability to persist and complete their educational goals successfully. Advisors support a diverse student population that reflects the demographics of the Commonwealth of Virginia, with more than 40 percent of current students coming from racially and ethnically diverse backgrounds. Knowledge of the unique needs of underserved populations—as well as a demonstrated commitment to helping these individuals attain educational success—is essential for this role.
In addition to advising new G3 (Get Skilled, Get a Job, Give Back) students, the Advisor will play a key role in retention initiatives, including proactive outreach, ongoing monitoring, and targeted support for students experiencing academic challenges. This includes:
- Providing specialized guidance to readmitted students, helping them transition back into the college environment and develop strategies for academic resilience.
- Supporting students with poor academic performance by assisting with academic recovery plans, connecting them to tutoring and support services, and coordinating interventions to improve course success and persistence.
- Serving as a Retention Advisor for vulnerable and high-risk student groups, offering structured check-ins, coaching, and resource navigation to promote continuous enrollment and progression.
The advisor is proactive and engages students through regular communication, consistent documentation of outreach and interactions, and intentional connections to college and community support services. Advisors assist with academic interventions when necessary and collaborate with faculty and staff to ensure coordinated care for students. Advisors utilize a variety of technology platforms to connect with students and track progress. The ability to learn and implement new technologies and the willingness to work in different environments are essential. The successful candidate must be organized, communicative, flexible, and committed to student success from onboarding through completion.
This is a restricted funded position.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Work experience in a higher education setting or in counseling or academic coaching/advising.
- Knowledge of barriers to educational success and a desire to help others reach their educational goals
