Job Description:
Academic Advisors provide academic advising for undergraduate main campus students. They will be expected to support students in developing educational goals and taking the appropriate steps forward. This position will serve as an expert for students on the requirements to graduate with an undergraduate degree from Old Dominion University and is expected to support students in utilizing the resources and support systems they have in place to complete their graduation requirements. This is a pool posting for 9 open positions spread across the College of Sciences Advising Center, the Strome College of Business Advising Center, the College of Arts and Letters Advising Center, the Batten School of Engineering and Technology Advising Center, and the Virginia Health Sciences Undergraduate Advising Center.
Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree Required 
  • Basic knowledge of advising theories and best practices
  • Basic ability to work with a diverse population of students, faculty, and administrators
  • Considerable interpersonal skills
  • Considerable written communication skills
  • Basic comfortability utilizing technology
  • Comprehensive empathy, flexibility, and a growth mindset
  • Basic ability to work independently and cooperatively
  • Basic knowledge of and commitment to higher education policies and procedures, including FERPA
  • Experience working with undergraduate students
  • Previous experience preferred in academic advising, coaching, or related higher education student services
Additional Considerations:

  • Master’s Degree preferably in Higher Education, Counseling or a field of study related to the specific college advising center
