The School of Data Science at the University of Virginia seeks applicants for part-time Professors of Practice in Data Science to join as Academic General Faculty (Practice Track). The school is assembling a diverse and world-class faculty with broad expertise in data science. We are seeking candidates with extensive real-world and industry experience in one or more domains of data science. Successful candidates are able to integrate their professional experience with the academic mission of the School through a combination of teaching, mentoring, scholarship, and service activities. Candidates should detail their methodologic expertise as it pertains to the domains of data science.
The domains of data science include, but are not limited to,
Data Ethics, Critical Data Studies & Policy (e.g., representativeness, privacy, ethics of algorithmic construction, interpretability)
Data Design (e.g., visualization, human-computer interaction, communication)
Data Structures (e.g., data architecture and pipelines, database theory)
Informatics (e.g., graph theory, information systems, bioinformatics)
Data Systems (e.g., high performance computing, continuous integration and deployment (CI/CD) of data science tools, cloud architectures, federated learning, data sharing).

The School of Data Science at UVA was established in 2019 with the largest private gift in the institution’s 200-year history. The School seeks to set the standard in data-centered practice to harness the power of data to better humanity through the proper collection, analysis, and dissemination of data in research and teaching.
Practice faculty duties include teaching (in-person and online), advising undergraduate students, and service to the university and the discipline. Practice faculty will have the opportunity to help shape the culture of a new school, develop modern pedagogy and establish new educational programs using experiential and project-based learning courses.
Candidates must have a Master’s or terminal degree in Data Science or a related field (e.g., STEM, social science or humanities degree with a Data Science focus). Equivalent experience can be considered in lieu of a degree. Evidence of excellence in integrating professional experience with educational activities in data science is requested. We especially encourage applications from individuals who are members of underrepresented groups, candidates engaged in educational activities with underserved populations, or candidates who have worked to broaden student access to data science careers.
Candidates must show a demonstrated commitment to, or potential for, excellence in data science education, advancing classroom paradigms for modern environments, and making advancements accessible to students of all backgrounds.
Rank will be commensurate with academic and industry experience. Appointments available on 9-month contracts.

Please be sure to indicate which classes and topics that you would be comfortable teaching or developing. If applicable, please describe your past research endeavors and contributions as well as any future research goals.
A diversity statement that summarizes your knowledge of, experience with, and interest in diversity, equity, and/or inclusion including issues of underrepresentation, ethics, bias, and/or disparity in data science. Please include issues of underrepresentation, ethics, bias, and/or disparity in data science, and draw a direct connection to your research and teaching activities where possible.
