The Office of Undergraduate Admission at the University of Virginia invites applications for the position of Admission Counselor.
Under the supervision of an Associate or Assistant Dean, the Admission Counselor performs duties related to the recruitment, evaluation, and enrollment of undergraduate students to the University.
Reporting to the Vice Provost for Enrollment, the Office of Undergraduate Admission partners with the Office of Student Financial Services, the University Registrar, and the Virginia College Advising Corps, as a critical member of the University’s Enrollment team. The team’s mission is: to care for students from their first interaction with the University through Final Exercises and beyond; to compete for great students from all walks of life who will make each other better; and to collaborate joyfully with colleagues to help these students make the most of their gifts and their time on Grounds. The field of undergraduate admission offers a window into the wider, dynamic world of modern higher education administration. As an Admission Counselor, you will develop working relationships which involve collaboration across a broad set of groups and individuals, including students, teachers, families, alumni, athletic staff, school counselors, student support staff, and all the members of our University community. We are seeking individuals who are interested in a career that is fulfilling and rewarding and who want to help us shape the University for the next decade and beyond.
Responsibilities include: designing and developing presentations for high schools, college fairs, community based organizations and other recruitment events; providing feedback and advice to prospective students, parents and families about the application process; serving as a liaison with various stakeholders such as alumni, faculty, and other members of the University community involved in the admissions process; in coordination with team members, planning and implementing on-and off-campus recruiting activities; hosting informational presentations on the University and undergraduate admission process; fielding inquiries and providing resources; serving on the admission application review committee; and evaluating applications and making recommendations for admission to the University. In addition, this Admission Counselor will work closely with current UVA students, admission-affiliated student organizations, and student organizations on grounds. This person should also be goal oriented, committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion and willing to work limited evenings and weekends when necessary. During some periods of the year admission counselors are permitted to work within a hybrid home/office work environment. Additional duties may be assigned as needed. The Admission Counselor will report to an Assistant or Associate Dean of Admission.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in higher education or a related field with at least 3 years of experience required (a total of eight years of experience in lieu of degree); demonstrates and supports a culture of diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism; strong organizational, interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills; and willingness to travel and work flexible and irregular hours.
Knowledge, skills and abilities to include:
Ability to work effectively as part of team to achieve shared goal; demonstrate thoughtful and appropriate oral and written communication in daily interactions, with an ability to advise prospective students, parents, and families about University admission; ability to serve as an advocate for individuals of all races, ethnicities, genders, ages and backgrounds. Have knowledge of basic computer applications and possess basic knowledge of the University’s educational mission, strategic aims, and programs.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience working or serving in student services, admissions or higher education, as a full time employee or as a college student.
