Advanced Assistant or Associate Professor of Mathematics Education, School of Education
The Department of Teaching and Learning in the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Education (SOE) prepares educators for schools, government agencies, and for-profit and non-profit organizations in the Commonwealth. Involving the area of mathematics education, we have undergraduate programs (B.S.Ed.) in Early Childhood and Teaching (PK-3) and Elementary Education and Teaching (PK-6). Our Master’s programs involving mathematics education include Curriculum and Instruction (M.Ed.), and Secondary Mathematics Education (M.T). We also have a Teaching Elementary Education graduate certificate and a Ph.D. in Education in Curriculum, Culture, and Change, a concentration that merges social foundations, curriculum and instruction, and teacher education.

Purpose of this Position: The purpose of this position is to sustain and grow existing programs in mathematics education. This will include working with colleagues in the SOE and across the university with faculty in the Department of Mathematics and other disciplines to enhance the preparation of educators who are responsive to the dynamic needs of diverse learners including students from groups that historically have been underrepresented in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines.
Position Responsibilities: We seek to hire a tenure eligible assistant professor, preferably with advanced experience, or associate professor, who has significant public school mathematics teaching experience. This position will blend a focus on teaching, program leadership, research, and doctoral training. The successful candidate will work with colleagues in other content areas (e.g., literacy, social studies) to co-lead elementary and/or secondary teacher preparation programs. This work will include sustaining and growing traditional on-campus instruction, online education, teacher residency, and apprenticeship models. It is also expected that the individual in this position will have an active program of research, collaborate with school partners, seek external research and training funding, and potentially collaborate with colleagues in the VCU Center for Innovation in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math Education (CISTEME), the Metropolitan Education Research Consortium (MERC), and/or other research units in the SOE and across the university.
Required Qualifications: •An earned doctorate in mathematics education or related discipline; •Clear evidence of professional experience teaching mathematics in public school settings; •Track record of research publications in mathematics education showing evidence of progress toward tenure criteria at an R1 university; •Commitment to mentoring graduate students for work in urban settings with individuals in our communities who have been historically marginalized, utilizing a culturally responsive lens; •Demonstrated professional work advancing access, equity, and inclusive excellence for individuals from historically marginalized and underrepresented minority populations, particularly those living in poverty and/or those that serve them; •Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse and inclusive faculty, staff, and student environment and commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU; •Experience working collaboratively with colleagues and community; and •Potential for external funding.
Preferred Qualifications: •Two or more years post-doctoral experience in research or teaching at the university level; •Three or more years of experiencing teaching at early, elementary and/or secondary level; •Experience with residency or apprenticeship models of teacher preparation; •Experience teaching mathematics at both the elementary and secondary levels; •Experience supervising student teachers/field experiences; and •Track record of securing external funding.

Salary Range: $90,000-$110,000
