The Office of Undergraduate Education is seeking talented educators from all liberal arts disciplines to join their corps of Advising Fellows, pre-major advisors who teach in the Engagements program, the required curriculum for all First-Year Students. Reporting to the Director of Undergraduate Advising, the Advising Fellows provide group and individual advising for first- and second-year students in the College. Fellows assist students in their transition to college, help them develop and practice strategies for academic success, and familiarize them with the array of resources across grounds (career center, study abroad, etc.). Student Advising Fellows are responsible for actively managing a caseload of students from matriculation through admission into a major/program. Their workload includes teaching multiple courses per year in the Engagements Program, running programming for Faculty and Students, and contributing to the College’s historical commitment to Liberal Arts education.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a work load of active first and second year advisees
  • Design Faculty advisor training and student-facing workshops
  • Teach multiple courses in the Engagements program
  • Communicate with students using different modalities and in ways that provide maximum connection, including scheduled meeting hours, walk-in hours, and via electronic means
  • Introduce students to the variety of student support resources available across grounds
  • Assist students in course registration and degree declaration
  • Actively manage progress towards graduation for advisees in portfolio; monitor and refer students to advising specialists when needed
  • Participate in an Advising Community of Practice in the College.
  • Maintain and possess knowledge about College curriculum and College and University academic policies
  • Demonstrate commitment to the value and purpose of a liberal arts education
  • Adopt an empathetic and learner-centered approach to supporting students
  • Demonstrate and maintain knowledge of research and best practices in student academic support


Qualifications:
  • PhD or terminal degree required
  • Experience with the liberal arts preferred

This position is located in Charlottesville, VA.

The anticipated salary for this position is $70,000. This is an exempt level, benefited position. For information on the benefits at UVA, visit hr.virginia.edu/benefits.

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally requires traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
