Job Description

Reporting to the Assistant Director of SAVES, the Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) Counselor is a 9-month position that works within a trauma informed environment, serving students and educating them in ways to develop themselves personally, educationally and vocationally, as well as to enhance their overall mental well-being. With a focus on substance use, this position will provide counseling (individual and group) and overall clinical outreach/educational services to the Radford University student community during the academic year of August – May. Responsibilities include intake, assessment, time-limited individual counseling, group counseling, outreach, and consultation. The position will work in collaboration with our Collegiate Recovery Community to develop and establish a recovery-friendly campus environment for students in recovery. The position will also be responsible for collaborating with colleagues throughout the University and community as well as contributing to departmental, student services, retention, and college growth.

Required Qualifications

Advanced degree in counseling, psychology, clinical social work or related field. Licensed or licensed eligible in mental health related discipline in the state of Virginia. Experience with individual counseling, brief interventions, crisis assessment, and group therapy with focus on substance use and co-occurring disorders. Working knowledge of counseling theory and techniques, especially those focused-on substance use and co-occurring disorders. Knowledge of electronic health records systems. Ability to appropriately assess and intervene in crisis situations. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues. Ability to treat all people equitably and with a sensitivity and awareness to cultural differences. Considerable knowledge of professional ethics and the ability to apply to current work. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Self-motivated with demonstrated understanding of the developmental issues of college students. Must be flexible and possess the ability to successfully handle multiple tasks/projects simultaneously and work well under pressure, independently, and in a team-oriented environment.

Licensed or licensed eligible in mental health related discipline in the state of Virginia.

Preferred Qualifications:

Prior professional clinical experience (3-5 years) working in a university/college or community counseling setting. Active license in state of Virginia (i.e. LPC or LCSW). Certified Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC) in state of Virginia or similarly held certification in another state/jurisdiction. Demonstrated ability to provide outreach, prevention, consultation and seminar presentations. Prior experience providing clinical supervision to interns, graduate students, and/or other clinical staff. Experience administering BASICS or other evidence-based programs for repeat alcohol and other drug offenders. Experience developing a Collegiate Recovery Program and/or working with a Collegiate Recovery Community.

Employment Conditions: This is a 9-month academic year position. The work cycle runs from August 10 to May 9.
