Job Description
The Department of Biomedical Engineering and Mechanics (BEAM) at Virginia Tech invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the assistant professor or associate professor level, effective August 2023. Applications are welcomed in all areas of computational and/or theoretical mechanics-based modeling. Preference will be given to candidates with scholarly interests that include application of engineering mechanics to problems in human health. We are seeking candidates motivated to contribute to a collegial, interdisciplinary community with a strong tradition of both fundamental and applied research, high quality teaching, and mentoring.
BEAM is an interdisciplinary department with faculty having broad interests spanning engineering, science, mathematics, and medicine. Offering BS, MS, and PhD degrees in biomedical engineering and in engineering mechanics, the department currently has 45 faculty members, and is home to over 200 undergraduate and 150 graduate students. BEAM’s graduate BME program is ranked #34 by US News & World Report.

Required Qualifications
The successful candidates will have a Ph.D. degree in biomedical engineering, engineering mechanics, or a closely aligned field, a strong record of academic accomplishments and a proven ability to work collaboratively, a commitment to interdisciplinary research and instruction, and a willingness to expand disciplinary boundaries to address complex technical and societal challenges. Tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to initiate and develop independent research that is internationally recognized for excellence, conscientiously mentor research-oriented graduate students, teach effectively at both graduate and undergraduate levels, and serve the university and their professional communities. The successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check.
