The University of Virginia is a highly competitive Division I program committed to academic and athletic excellence. The Department of Athletics at the University of Virginia is now accepting applications for an Assistant Athletic Trainer to support the Sports Medicine office. This position will provide sports medicine coverage for Women's Lacrosse and Camps.

The Assistant Athletic Trainers are responsible for assisting the Associate AD for Sports Medicine in the prevention, evaluation, treatment, referral, and rehabilitation of injuries/illnesses to student athletes. Specific duties include, but are not limited to: assisting in the daily health care of student-athletes; recording and maintaining appropriate medical records for treatment given; helping to establish and implement staff and sports medicine student's in-service programs; interfacing with various internal and external personnel for referral purposes and information exchange; providing guidance to graduate students, undergraduate interns and practicum students in the Sports Medicine unit; assisting in various teaching responsibilities and in clinical education; providing support in the administrative management of the Sports Medicine unit; transporting student-athletes to medical appointments; and other miscellaneous job-related duties as deemed necessary by the Associate AD for Sports Medicine.

Anticipated hiring range: $50,000.00 - $52,500.00, dependent upon qualifications. The selected candidate will pass a background check. This is a full-time position with UVa benefits. Employees benefits package highlights include:

Required Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's Degree

Experience: One year of certified athletic trainer experience in an NCAA institutional athletic environment.

Licensure: Eligibility for State Licensure. National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) and CPR/AED certifications are required. Valid driver's license also required.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • Knowledge of NCAA, ACC and institutional rules and regulations.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituents in a diverse community.
  • Demonstrates genuine concern and interest for the welfare of student-athletes.
  • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of CPR and emergency medical procedures.
  • Ability to evaluate therapeutic requirements for student-athletes, and to fit and modify therapeutic and/or protective equipment.
  • Ability to function professionally in highly stressful situations and to provide clear information on an impromptu basis to individuals or groups of people.
  • Ability to maintain poise in emergency situations and effectively interact with people in a calm, positive manner.
  • Ability and desire to perform accurate, detail-oriented work, manage multiple tasks simultaneously, and maintain confidentiality and a professional demeanor.
  • Ability to make administrative/procedural decisions and sound judgments.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Organizational and computer skills.
  • Ability to relate to both men's and women's athletic injuries and rehabilitation of injuries to student-athletes required.


Preferred Qualifications

Education: Master's Degree

Preferred experience includes:
  • 2+ years' experience working in a Division I-A institution.
  • Experience providing sports medicine care for overhead sports and/or overuse injuries.
  • Experience working as a certified athletic trainer or first aider for camps.
  • First Aid/CPR Instructor.
  • Experience working in the supervision and education of student interns and graduate assistants.
  • Additional Certifications: CES, PES, FMS, cupping, and/or Graston certifications preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Work is performed in the process of providing medical assistance and services to student-athletes which may include physical therapy and rehabilitation. Work is performed in a Sports Medicine facility possibly with the use of compressed gasses, cleaning products, weight bearing and strengthening equipment and apparatus.
