Job Duties

The Virginia Office of the Attorney General is seeking a qualified attorney to serve as a prosecutor within its Criminal Justice and Public Safety Division, who will be cross-designated as a Special Assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, Norfolk Division. We offer the challenge and opportunity of public service, a professional team environment, and competitive salaries and benefits.

The Criminal Justice and Public Safety Division (“CJ&PSD”) is the primary prosecutorial arm of the Office of the Attorney General. This cross-designated position, located in the Norfolk office of the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia (“USAO”), will report to both the Chief of the Major Crimes and Emerging Threats (“MCET”) Section of the Virginia Office of the Attorney General and to the Managing Assistant United States Attorney of the USAO’s Norfolk Criminal Division. The position, which will be cross-designated as an Assistant Attorney General and as a Special Assistant United States Attorney, is responsible for violent crime prosecutions handled by the CJ&PSD and the USAO.
The position requires extensive knowledge of the state and federal criminal justice systems and state government, and offers a unique and challenging experience for a highly motivated attorney: the opportunity to handle their own caseload in which the incumbent will work in conjunction with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies in the investigation and prosecution of state and federal offenses. Prosecutions will primarily focus on violent crime and firearm offenses and may include drug trafficking, sex-trafficking, and money-laundering. The position requires the ability to analyze and provide concise, appropriate, practical and accurate advice on legal issues. The position handles other assignments as needed. Additionally, the position is responsible for assisting in the review and drafting of official advisory opinions of the Attorney General and reviewing legislation during sessions of the Virginia General Assembly.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Applicants must be a United States citizen, have graduated from an accredited law school, and be admitted to the Virginia State Bar or be eligible for admission.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills and good judgment are required as well as excellent written and oral communication skills, and the ability to analyze and manage complex cases.
  • An appointment to this position is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication.
  • In addition, continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.

Additional Considerations

It is preferred that the ideal candidate for this position have a minimum of five years of relevant experience, including prosecutorial experience in Virginia and/or in federal courts.
