The University of Virginia Darden School of Business seeks an Assistant Director, Employer Engagement and Recruiting to join its Career Development Center . With strong momentum in the residential MBA and professional MBA formats and recent innovations and industry-leading results, the Assistant Director joins Darden at an exciting time. Darden's Career Development Center (Career Center) provides over 1,100 graduate business students ( Full-Time MBA , Part-Time MBA , Executive MBA , and Specialty Masters ) with one-on-one professional career advising, lifelong career management skills, and exceptional internship/post-degree job search support. The team empowers students on their career journey, and its commitment to student success has no bounds. The department thrives on helping students maximize their employment opportunities.

The Career Center annually engages hundreds of companies that recruit and hire students for careers in consulting, investment banking, marketing, general management, high tech, private equity/venture capital, and others. Many more employers open MBA positions to Darden talent, often leveraging virtual recruiting technologies and platforms. In 2021, the center managed over 1,600 job postings and hosted nearly 440 on-Grounds recruiting events. Over 450 unique companies employ graduates from our degree programs. Our employer engagement model helps our corporate partners achieve their hiring goals and fosters long-term relationships between organizations and the school.

The Assistant Director manages company contacts with corporate recruiters, UVA/Darden alumni, and designated school leads through face-to-face, phone and e-mail communications. The role implements recruiting activities and collaborates with the broader Career Center, Enterprise stakeholders, and student club leadership to develop an effective plan for recruiting partner organizations. The job requires the ability to utilize web-based career management systems, including data management and system administration. In addition, updating company data, managing recruiting details and system process improvements for greater efficiency are also key elements of the role. Superior customer service is a key feature of the Employer Engagement & Recruiting team.

This position is located in-person in Charlottesville, VA.

Specific Responsibilities:

Employer Engagement
  • Schedules, organizes, and provides logistical/tactical support for on Grounds companies including company briefings, interview schedules, requests for resumes, job postings, and marketing of employer events.
  • Manages day-to-day activities of visiting recruiters and employer guests; ensuring that needs are accommodated, and the visit progresses smoothly.
  • Maintains relationships with key corporate contacts; including recruiting teams and alumni to develop open communications for quick problem solving, feedback, and value-added benefits.
  • Develops and executes virtual recruiting tactics.
  • Guides employers in developing and executing strategies for attracting Darden MBA and MS talent by providing insights and benchmarking information.
  • Communicates critical and time sensitive information to students, Career Center, and Darden Enterprise when necessary.
  • Supports an employer engagement plan with a broad range of firms to expand, develop and nurture partnerships and sustains the professional relationships that lead to employment of Darden students and alumni.
  • Supports annual company debrief meetings, student treks (or company visits), or other engagement opportunities.
  • Participates and travels to recruiter's conferences and employer events; initiates contact with new potential recruiters and develops leads.


Collaboration with Departments across Darden and the University of Virginia
  • Establishes productive partnerships within the Career Center to advance MBA and MS recruiting in an effective, innovative way.
  • Builds relationships with colleagues to keep up-to-date on graduate business recruiting trends and challenges, opportunities, and best practices.
  • Collaborates with Darden student organizations to support outreach strategies and target employers.
  • Partners with relevant stakeholders across the University to ensure effective development, management, implementation, and growth of domestic and international employer relationship opportunities.


Education and Professional Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree and at least five years of experience required. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of degree requirement.
  • Demonstrated high level of professionalism, customer service, follow-through, teamwork, flexibility, and positive, can-do attitude.
  • Interpersonal skills and aptitude transferable to the tasks of providing guidance and information to employers and graduate students.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Excellent attention to detail, accuracy, and organization to monitor performance and to implement and oversee processes.
  • Strong computer skills and ability to learn new software applications, including database management software and web-based applications.
  • Ability to work independently and as an effective team member in a fast-paced environment. Requires ability to be pro-active, to prioritize and to work under pressure.
  • Experience working with MBA students and alumni in career development, career counseling, business development, or corporate recruiting and/or corporate relationship is preferred.
  • Excellent ability to build and maintain effective collaborative relationships, including but not limited to a diverse set of employers, university officials, staff, faculty, mature graduate students, and alumni.
