The University of Virginia's Department of Student Health and Wellness (SHW) is seeking an experienced Assistant Director of Finance. This role reports to the Director of Administration and is responsible for managing the daily financial activities to include reporting on the overall financial operations of the department.
Primary areas of focus include accounting, budget management, payroll, financial analysis, purchasing, and reporting. The Assistant Director of Finance will serve as a finance expert with the ability work independently, make decisions providing the management oversight and direction for other finance staff to operate efficiently and effectively, adhering to established compliance guidelines, institutional standards, organizational timelines, and fulfilling leadership goals.
Job Description
Manage the day-to-day finance operations of the department, monitor accounting operations, sponsored research financial oversight, and make recommendations on resource allocations, plan and coordinate data management, record-keeping, and financial reporting needs.
Supervise staff performing finance-oriented functions and provide training and development of newly assigned or less experienced personnel.
Manage finance functions providing regular reports and recommendations to senior leaders, ensuring compliance with GAAP procedures, Cost Accounting Standards (CAS), and Uniform Guidance as applicable.
Review and track procurement contracts including several large Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs).
Responsible for taking on particularly difficult or complex finance tasks, using a depth and breadth of finance and institutional knowledge to complete them to a high standard.
Work with program directors, principal investigators, and the University’s Office of Sponsored Programs on research proposal submissions and subsequent post-award management.
Work closely with the Director of Administration on all financial operations including annual budget preparation.
In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties and projects may be assigned.
The anticipated hiring range for this role is will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. This is an exempt-level, benefited position. The successful candidate will pass a background check and health/drug screen. This is a full-time position with UVa benefits. Employees benefits package highlights include:

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education: Bachelor's degree in relevant subject Experience: At least seven years of experience in a financial discipline, likely with supervisory experience. 11 years of relevant/finance experience accepted in lieu of degree. Licensure: May hold CPA or other advanced financial certification.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Significant experience in financial analysis, budget management, and grants accounting preferably within an academic medical center
Mastery of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Uniform Guidance, and associated Cost Accounting Standard (CAS) principles
Demonstrated ability to manipulate large amounts of data and compile concise financial reports to leadership
Proven skills working within tight deadlines and competing priorities.

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
