General Information:

The Center for Multicultural Student Services (CMSS) within the Division of Student Affairs at James Madison University invites applications for the position of Assistant Director for Multicultural Programs & Intercultural Engagement. This position resides within the Division of Student Affairs.

Duties and Responsibilities:

#1: Departmental Functions: Multicultural Programming, Engagement

The Assistant Director (Asst. Dir.) plays a critical role on a team focused on strengthening and providing advocacy and support for multicultural, multiethnic students and historically marginalized communities on campus. This position leads the continual development of intentional and intersectional programming that supports and carries out the mission and vision, intercultural relations, and accessibility and belonging initiatives for the department, division and university. In collaboration with the CMSS staff, campus partners, students, and local community, the Asst. Director will:

  • Develop, lead, manage and plan all Cultural Heritage Months and Education/social programs for the department and coordinate the creation of thorough marketing materials (With Student Affairs Communications and Marketing) and advertisement for said programs.
  • Create opportunities for students, which foster an inclusive environment for engaged learning and educational experiences to explore multiple ethnic, and cultural identity groups and perspectives.
  • Evaluate and determine which co-curricular programs are relevant, impactful and intentional to students’ identities, holistic student development, and sense of belonging.
  • Develop thorough program implementation plans to ensure smooth, extremely well-organized and exceptional programming and events (e.g., program scripts, run-of-show, correspondence).
  • Lead “We are JMU-An Introduction to Inclusion” for incoming first year and transfer students during Weeks of Welcome. (Large-scale University-wide program)
  • Oversee all planning and logistics for the department’s MLK Celebration and Intercultural graduation celebrations.
  • Oversee and recommend programming for the affinity cultural lounge spaces within CMSS.
  • Manage budget and resources for programming areas according to all university and State policies.
  • Assist and provide support to the Diversity Educational Empowerment Program (D.E.E.P. Impact)
  • As necessary, guest lecture in the HRD 123: Developing Multicultural Competency for Effective Facilitation course.
  • Assists with other departmental, campus-wide, local community programming efforts: For example,
    JMU Homecoming, admissions recruitment, Overnight at Madison, Pre-orientation programs, travel with students, etc.

#2: Staffing & Supervision

  • The Assistant Director has direct supervision and responsibility for the recruitment, hiring, selection process, and training of the Coordinator for Affinity Cultural Spaces. Supervision includes weekly 1-1 meetings, training, coaching and mentoring.

#3: Assessment

The Assistant Director will:

  • Develop goals and learning outcomes for all programming and initiatives they oversee, using the Curricular Approach, best practices, research/assessment data, experiential knowledge and complete both evaluation and assessment of each.
  • Work alongside the Associate Director for Cultural Education, D.E.E.P. Impact and Engagement, to co-lead all assessment efforts, in the department, in collaboration with the Student Affairs Assessment Committee and in partnership with CARS for multicultural / intercultural programming, engagement, initiatives and education. 
  • Prepare annual reports and assist with departmental program reviews and evaluations as directed.

#4: Staff Training

  • Onboard and train Coordinator for Affinity Cultural Spaces & additional direct reports.
  • Assist CMSS directors with Training for CMSS student staff (e.g., Creating, enhancing, evaluating, and assessing training by using research, data, best practices from professional association, experiential knowledge etc.).
  • Assist the Associate Director in developing and facilitating diversity education & training and presentations across the JMU enterprise as needed. (e.g., content development, delivery, and occasionally providing consultations to campus constituents on critical/field-specific inquiries/needs.)

#5: Marketing and Communication:

  • Serve as the department’s key point person assuring that there is an appropriate marketing and communication plan with deadlines in place for program planning and logistics for the entire programming team.
  • Work with CMSS director and staff to ensure all department-sponsored programs are marketed to intended target audiences on all platforms promptly. Make appropriate use of Student Affairs Marketing and Communication resources as necessary.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • A master’s degree in college student personnel administration or relevant field
  • Knowledge of issues relating to historically underrepresented and marginalized communities
  • Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal, supervisory and organizational skills, along with the ability to work effectively with diverse groups of people
  • Experience with student development and group facilitation

Preferred:

  • Experience coordinating large-scale events and partnerships
  • Experience in the areas of diversity, social justice, identity development, psychology, or other related areas
  • Knowledge of assessment as it relates to student learning and development
