Multicultural Student Services (MSS) centers on the success and well-being of historically marginalized students while also providing educational opportunities for all students. MSS staff provide services and support to identified populations, including Asian, Pacific Islander, and South Asian-American students; DACA and undocumented students; Hispanic/Latinx students; Native/Indigenous students; Middle Eastern/North African students; and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and gender fluid students. MSS also manages the Multicultural Student Center, the LGBTQ Center, the Latinx Student Center, and the Interfaith Student Center. MSS aims to enhance the undergraduate experience through culturally relevant services such as cultural and community-building programming, individual and student organization support, identity-based peer mentor programs and leadership development programs, student success initiatives, and community advocacy efforts. MSS also seeks to engage the broader student body in learning experiences through social justice, intercultural, and multicultural education offerings.

The Assistant Director for Multicultural Student Services supports the services and initiatives of the office, provides leadership for the operations of the Multicultural Student Center (MSC) and Interfaith Student Center (IFSC), and coordinates MSS student success, social justice education, and intercultural engagement programs .Reporting to the Associate Dean of Students and Director of Multicultural Student Services, the Assistant Director partners across the institution to deepen the sense of belonging and enhance the quality of historically marginalized students’ college experience.The Assistant Director will develop programs, initiatives, and resources to support the overall success of multicultural students, create opportunities for identity and cultural exploration, engage students in experiences that expand their knowledge of social justice concepts, and create opportunities for students to develop the skills to navigate conflicting ideologies.The Assistant Director will also continue to develop the Multicultural Student Center (MSC) as a space for support, advocacy, education, development, and community for all students, and build out the programs and services of the Interfaith Student Center (IFSC).

Specific Responsibilities Include:
  • Oversee the programs and operations of the Multicultural Student Center. Supervise, train, and evaluate interns whose roles focus on community engagement, student success, and intercultural education/engagement.
  • Deliver academic, social, career, and personal development programs through the MSS Multicultural Student Success initiative.
  • Initiate and plan community building programs and meetings for student communities supported by Multicultural Student Services.
  • Provide information, outreach, support, and advisement to students on transition, adjustment, wellness, campus navigation, community building, and intercultural opportunities.
  • Oversee the programs and operations of the Interfaith Student Center, and supervise, train, and evaluate student intern in the development of interfaith dialogue, community-building, and faculty engagement programs.
  • Foster relationships with faith communities to promote religious/spiritual identity, diversity, and expression through celebratory programs and events.
  • Coordinate the Social Justice Education Collective (SJEC), a diverse group of students who educate their peers on culture and issues of social justice.
  • Teach UNST 2500: SOCIAL JUSTICE ENGAGEMENT & EDUCATION, the accompanying one-credit course for SJEC facilitators.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive set of workshops/educational opportunities for students focusing on diversity, self-understanding, social justice, empowerment, inclusion, and advocacy.
  • Advise the student organization Sustained Dialogue in the development of ongoing, regularly scheduled dialogue groups about social identities, critical inclusion/equity issues, and current events.
  • Provide individual support to students in their social, leadership, and identity development and provide advocacy and support with the Associate Dean for individuals and student groups including advising and referral, as appropriate, on campus diversity issues and bias incidents.
  • Develop and maintain strategic and collaborative partnerships with university departments, programs, and outside constituent groups that support historically marginalized identities and bridge multiple identities.
  • Serve as a campus resource for diversity, inclusion, and social justice education training and workshops. Contribute to the development, writing, facilitation, and assessment of original diversity education curricula for general by-request workshops and trainings.
  • Represent the Division of Student Affairs on University-wide committees, councils and task forces that promote diversity.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Candidates must have the following required knowledge areas, skills, and abilities:
  • Master’s degree or equivalent in student affairs, counseling, higher education, or other discipline, or a terminal degree in a relevant field
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of progressive relevant experience
  • Strong commitment to the division’s core values of academic rigor, honor, student self-governance, public service, diversity and multiculturalism, and health and wellness
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice, equity, and belonging
  • Experience working with historically marginalized and under-represented communities
  • Understanding student development, identity development, intersections, and complexity of social identities
  • Experience in programming, advising, supervision.


A competitive applicant for the Director position will have many of the following preferred knowledge areas, skills, and abilities:
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, and to develop mutually beneficial relationships with various University partners (e.g.,faculty, staff, school deans)
  • Ability to supervise and work alongside students and student leaders within ahighly student self-governed environment
  • Demonstrated mastery of providing outstanding student advising and support, attention to detail, and excelling in a fast-paced work environment with multiple competing priorities
  • Strong theoretical and practical understanding of cultural, identity, student, and organizational development
  • Strong planning, coordination, and evaluation skills, as well as program and/or workshop facilitation skills
  • Flexibility and willingness to work extended hours and weekends as necessary and recognize the need to do so independently
  • An understanding of cognitive and psychological models related to support and development of college students
  • Strong knowledge of student affairs practices as applied to a diverse range of programmatic areas
  • Experience with community and stakeholder engagement
  • Experience with assessment and data-driven decision-making
  • Understanding of financial stewardship and budget management
  • Domain knowledge specific to the Student Affairs program or department in which the Assistant Director will work.


The salary range for is $55,000.00 - $65,000.00 commensurate with qualifications and experience. The Assistant Director, Multicultural Student Services is a full-time, twelve-month University Managerial and Professional Staff position with full benefits . Benefits package highlights include:
