The University of Virginia is a highly competitive Division I program committed to academic and athletic excellence. The Department of Athletics at the University of Virginia is now accepting applications for an Assistant Director of Creative Services - Multimedia Design. The Assistant Director of Creative Services - Multimedia Design works with various sport programs in creating graphic designs and print materials to support recruiting prospective student-athletes, prospective and current Virginia fans, and in the marketing and promotion of the overall Athletic Department. The Designer's work supports communications to a variety of groups, including, but not limited to alumni, fans, donors, parents, and faculty and staff.

The incumbent sets the day-to-day schedule as directed by the needs of the Athletics Department and has the authority to take initiative in the creative process from concept to delivery under the overall creative direction and quality control of the Director of Creative Services. Work will on occasion be reviewed in an effort to receive feedback and direction. This position requires a flexible schedule: evening and weekend hours as assigned. The Assistant Director initiates communication and collaborates with various internal and external constituencies to gather information and ideas. The Assistant Director is accountable for NCAA, ACC and University rules and regulations. The incumbent consults with the Director of Creative Services when faced with a more challenging problem or situation beyond the scope of their duties or expertise.The incumbent will:
  • Provide exemplary customer service to internal and external constituencies.
  • Serve as an art director and graphic designer.
  • Facilitate the planning, creation and timely production of graphics for UVA athletics websites, social media, digital and print advertisements, brochures, posters, and other materials.
  • Assist in the daily management of student interns.
  • Plan and create designs for the communication of information to various external and internal constituencies.
  • Set and maintain the overall visual style and brand of Virginia Athletics.

  • Sets and maintains the brand of Virginia Athletics through all internal and external designs with an adherence to standards included but not limited to marks, logos, fonts, colors, and sponsorships.
  • Develops and fosters a relationship with Virginia Athletics Marketing & Promotions and Virginia Sports Properties in order to execute design work that aligns with specific campaign directives and creative elements.
  • Works with the Social Media Committee, Marketing & Promotions, VSP, and other internal departments and programs to meet deadlines and develop distribution plans.
  • Acts as primary designer for recruiting and special projects of Virginia Athletics sport programs in order to dynamically service the social media and recruiting needs of those constituencies.
  • Determines and ensures the visual branding elements of Virginia Athletics, maintaining and updating the Virginia Athletics Style Guide.
  • Collaborates with internal and Creative Services departments in the execution of brand strategy including the capture of photographic assets and artistic direction of specialty shoots.
  • Maintains a database of branded elements, photos, and design files for personal use and distribution to other creative services personnel.
  • Assists in instruction of student graphic design works and aids in administering the Creative Services student employment program.
  • Completion of projects on-time and to exacting specifications included but not limited to: digital and print advertisements, posters, mailers, apparel, recruiting graphics, championships and award recognition, and special projects as assigned.

Other Responsibilities:
  • Keep current and aware of new design styles, elements, techniques, and software within athletic graphic design.
  • Works collaboratively with Creative Services and other units to deliver a consistent, high-quality visual style across all properties, campaigns, and efforts.
  • Communicates clearly to express thoughts and ideas.
  • Manages multiple projects effectively.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

  • Minimum of three years of experience in the graphic arts.
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Previous athletics experience (collegiate or professional) preferred.
  • Ability to utilize standard principles of professional design while demonstrating a high level of proficiency or mastery in design software (Photoshop/Illustrator).
  • Demonstrate a high-level understanding of not only Virginia Athletics brand standards, but also of the unique characteristics of the University of Virginia and its traditions.
  • Strong communication skills in dealing with multiple constituencies and in conveying messaging to external audiences.
  • Advanced knowledge of computers and software: Microsoft Office; Adobe Product Suite including InDesign, Adobe After Effects and/or other compositing software preferred.
  • The ability to learn and develop new, relevant technology skills when required.
  • Digital Portfolio of applicable work required for all applicants.

Physical Demands:

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require some physical work on specialty photo shoots and projects.
