The University of Virginia Darden School of Business seeks an Assistant Director of Financial Aid to assist in coordinating and administering federal, state, administration, and institutional financial aid programs for the Darden School of Business. Responsibilities will include a review of financial aid information submitted via the FAFSA & UFAA, creating financial aid packages, certifying alternative loan applications, reviewing subsequent ISIRs to determine impact on financial assistance and clear students in SISSUES.

The Assistant Director will provide maintenance to all webpages and will share with the Director the responsibility for monitoring and reporting on key metrics relating to outstanding loan balances, defaults, and other key indicators of private loans on behalf of UVA/Darden School Foundation. This position will assist in providing loan repayment counseling to students preparing to graduate.

Specific duties and responsibilities:

Financial Aid Administration
  • Complete the verification process of financial information submitted by student financial aid applicants on the FAFSA and UFAA.
  • Create financial aid award packages in keeping with federal and State regulations, University endowment policies and donor restrictions on over 150 scholarship accounts.
  • Certify alternative loans in ELM and post awards in the SIS.
  • Review subsequent Institutional Student Information Records (ISIR) to determine impact on student eligibility.
  • Assign appropriate communications in SIS based on initial or revised awards.
  • Clear instances in SISSUES that impact student eligibility and disbursement of financial assistance.
  • Conduct yearly surveys regarding student reported expenses to be used in establishing student budgets for financial assistance.
  • Represent the Darden School to the University Student Financial Services with best interests of both Darden Students and University operation in mind.
  • Be available to attend all training, help, redesign, and updates on SIS and UBI necessary to operate in the realm of all aspects of University Student Financial Services (both Student Accounts and Financial Aid).

Financial Aid Counseling
  • Assist and participate in counseling sessions to support the admissions office.
  • As needed, conduct individual Entrance Counseling Interviews with newly admitted students.
  • As needed, conduct Exit Counseling Interviews with graduating students.
  • As needed, counsel all MBA formats regarding obtaining, maintaining and appeal procedures based on federal, state and institutional regulations.

  • Run reports and troubleshoot federal and private loan originations and disbursements.
  • Monitor and report on key metrics relating to outstanding loan balances, defaults, and other key indicators of private loans on behalf of UVA/Darden School Foundation.
  • Complete various surveys on financial aid data.
  • Oversee Darden’s cost of attendance surveys for students in all MBA formats.

  • Maintain the Financial Aid Website and Portals keeping critical information for students current.

Professional experience and education:
  • Bachelor's degree and at least four years of financial aid experience. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Proficiency in MS-Office products, database management, report writing and social network outlets.
  • Ability to function effectively in a team environment, with minimal supervision, to achieve results and meet goals in a service-oriented environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to review, interpret, and make professional judgments on complex issues while maintaining compliance with federal and state regulations.
  • Demonstrated ability to synthesize large volumes of data from numerous sources, and the ability to utilize all available resources appropriately.
  • Ability to prioritize duties and responsibilities to meet office goals and objectives.
  • Ability to handle and manage ambiguity, repetition, and change.
  • Displays excellent organizational skills, can simplify and clarify complex processes, and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and is able to take initiative and motivate others.
  • Strong customer service skills and the ability to develop rapport to discuss sensitive and personal information and to resolve customer concerns/questions.
  • Strong technical and web-based skills with the ability to identify and initiate improvements to processes and systems. Proficiency in Peoplesoft and Oracle preferred.
