The University of Virginia Provost’s division of Summer & Special Academic Programs seeks applicants for an Assistant Director of Operations. The Assistant Director will serve as a key staff member for student academic programs, which could include undergraduate or graduate degree programs, or summer or January term sessions. They combine administrative responsibilities and program outreach and promotion.

The successful candidate will be expected to:
  • UVA Advance:Plan, implement and evaluate the University’s credit-bearing summer program for high school students. Includes program development, promotion, student recruitment, oversight of application review, coordination of faculty members, supervise graduate and undergraduate residential community staff.
  • International Students: Develop and provide support for visiting international students participating in January Term and Summer Session.
  • Peace Corps Prep: Manage the University’s collaboration with the Peace Corps to offer the Peace Corps Prep Certificate, promoting the certificate to relevant student groups, advising student participants, certifying that requirements have been met, and awarding certificates. Plan and implement events for student participants.
  • Special Programs:Coordinate with grant recipients and others to develop and manage programs such as Archaeological Field Schools, the Museum for Southern Decorative Arts Summer Institute, courses for public school teachers, and programs for visiting international students.
  • Outreach & Promotion:Manage the development of print and digital marketing materials. Coordinate participation in fairs and orientation events, as well as overseeing the maintenance of the department’s websites. Represent Summer & Special Academic Programs in various on-Grounds and professional groups.
  • Additional Responsibilities:Serve as a proxy for administrative leaders in Summer & Special Academic Programs as needed, including supervising staff and coordinating office functions in the absence of administrators, and mentoring graduate interns.


Minimum Qualifications:
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree
  • Experience: Four years of relevant experience.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Education: Master’s degree


Physical Demands:

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.

The anticipated hiring range for this position is $58,000 - $62,000
