Tidewater Community College has served South Hampton Roads – both students and employers – for 50 years. It has grown from 1 campus into a regional educational and economic force. TCC is the largest provider of higher education and workforce services in Hampton Roads, enrolling nearly 28,000 students in 2019-20. Founded in 1968 as a part of the Virginia Community College System, Tidewater Community College (TCC) services South Hampton Roads with 4 campuses in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, 7 regional centers and 2 important cultural institutions. The college had 3,203 graduates in 2019-2020, 40 percent of whom pursued degrees that would let them transfer to 4-year institutions. Of South Hampton Roads residents enrolled in higher education 36% enrolled at TCC. TCC’s institutional accreditation is affirmed through 2027 by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.
Position Summary:
Provide excellent customer service to a diverse population in person, by email, or telephone. Understand, explain, and assist students in applying for and utilizing their military education benefits at the college. Ensure services on campus support and promote efficient certification of benefits by the Benefits Processing Office (BPO), located on the Virginia Beach Campus. Assist BPO with reporting requirements to the Dept. of Veterans Affairs as directed. Respond to emails, answer phone inquiries from students and staff, respond to Microsoft Teams, in order to provide comprehensive services to the military student population. Understand and comply with Federal, State, Virginia Community College System (VCCS), and Tidewater Community College policies and procedures regarding the processing of the GI Bill ®, Tuition Assistance, MyCAA, and Virginia Military Dependents and Survivors Education Program (VMSDEP).
Functional Responsibilities:
Provide guidance to students regarding Tuition Assistance, GI Bill®, or My Career Advancement Account as funding options.
Assist students in applying for the various educational benefits and subsequent use of these benefits at Tidewater Community College.
Assist students in the process of transferring benefits.
Assist students in sending in transcripts to the college in order to promote credit for prior learning as well as for compliance.
Review the student’s academic advising report to ensure classes can be certified as part of the degree plan.
Use contemporary computer application software to include Microsoft Office, Image Now/Prospective Content, and other information technology applications such as those that manage college student information data (SIS) including Outlook for email and calendars.
Ensure students know whether they are paying in state or out of state tuition rates.
Ensure students understand their class schedule and whether the class(es) can be certified for benefits.
Possess extensive knowledge of the School Certifying Handbook, published by the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Understand tuition payment procedures for each benefit and discuss with students.
Become a School Certifying Official and assist with certifications and reporting requirements as determined by the Veterans Service Coordinator (VSC).
Collaborate with Office Manager in providing exceptional services to students and staff. Collaborate on process improvements.
Train and supervise work study students in the absence of the Office Manager.
Ensure office hours are covered in coordination with and as directed by the Office Manager.
Support a variety of college events including Orientation, Open House, Extended Hours, and Information Sessions.
Minimum Qualifications:
Provide exceptional customer service for a diverse student population.
Strong interpersonal, time-management, coordination, planning and organizational skills.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Demonstrated computer skills to include word processing, spreadsheet, database, email and Internet applications including a student database.
Knowledge of DOD active duty, reserve, National Guard, Coast Guard, veterans’ and family members education benefits.
Demonstrated ability to identify and manage multiple priorities while providing excellent customer service.
Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and set work priorities.
Preferred Qualifications:
Ability to work with sensitive information and maintain high level of confidentiality by following FERPA, college, and department guidelines.
