The University of Virginia’s Miller Center seeks an ASSISTANT or ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF PRESIDENTIAL STUDIES (depending on experience) to work closely with the Director of Presidential Studies to develop and implement the overall strategy and manage day-to-day operations of the Center's flagship programs in Presidential Studies. The Assistant or Associate Director develops and implements initiatives that further the mission of the Center, providing budgetary and administrative oversight, directly coordinating and scheduling presidential studies events both on and off site, and working with faculty in fulfilling the Center's research agenda. The Assistant or Associate Director manages one full-time coordinator and manages student engagement in Miller Center programs and events.
Responsibilities
Administer and manage day-to-day operations of Presidential Studies programs
Support Director of Presidential Studies in general administrative tasks and in managing research agendas and related initiatives
Supervise Faculty and Program Coordinator who oversees administrative support for events, faculty engagement, recruitment of endowed chair holders and senior fellows, and special projects
Develop budgets for programs, conferences, and events
Develop agendas for faculty and senior fellow meetings
Serve as primary point of contact for Presidential Studies within the Miller Center, actively participating in meetings on behalf of Presidential Studies and supervising the development of reports to the Miller Center Governing Council
Develop and support student engagement efforts
Manage student summer internship program, recruiting, screening, and placing student interns externally in governmental agencies and internally in the Miller Center and other University units
Creatively enhance opportunities for students to learn about and become involved with the Miller Center
Serve as liaison between the Miller Center and University student groups
Manage and support special programming and events
Serve as program manager for Democracy Dialogues, in conjunction with the University Office of the President and Karsh Institute of Democracy
Work closely with Miller Center Director and CEO on program planning and special events
Manage other special events, conferences, and workshops as needed
Embrace other opportunities
Act as point of contact for external partners interested in or related to Presidential Studies
Contribute original content and/or edit scholarly material for publication, on occasion
Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Master's degree required, Ph.D. preferred, preferably in U.S. history, political science, law, or a related field
To be considered at the Assistant level, five years of experience is required. To be considered at the Associate level, seven years of experience is required. Preference will be given to candidate with experience academic operations, program development, and/or student programs. Experience may include full-time employment and/or internships, externships, shadowing, volunteering, employment as a student worker, part-time or summer jobs, experience attained during a Ph.D. program, and similar activities in which skills that are relevant to the work of the position are developed.
Experience working with university faculty and supervising staff, preferred
Demonstrated interest in American politics, public policy, history, and/or international affairs, required
Demonstrated interest in public affairs scholarship, including applying academic research for public audiences through venues such as public affairs journals, op-eds, policy white papers, or policy memos, preferred
Ability to communicate effectively, in both oral and written communications, required
Ability to conceive, plan, coordinate, and promote events and enhance academic initiatives, required
Ability to work with faculty and staff, meet deadlines, and handle multiple tasks daily, required
Ability to exercise good judgment, required
Ability to develop and follow budgets, required
Ability to compile, synthesize, and present content-heavy and specialized information for various audiences, required
Ability to set a standard and inspire others to follow in attention to detail, understanding of how components fit together, and manner of relating to guests participating in programs and events, required
Ability to handle competing priorities, including competing components of the position, required
Ability to work independently and collaboratively towards common goals, required
Ability to uphold the values of the Miller Center’s faculty and staff, required

Physical Demands
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings and programs.
Additional Position Information
Currently, the Miller Center is a hybrid working environment due to Covid-19 protocols. Upon the University’s and the Miller Center’s reevaluation of return to Grounds, the Miller Center will become primarily an in-person working environment , with occasional opportunities to work from home.
This is a restricted position which extends through June 16, 2024. Renewal is possible, subject to performance, availability of funds, and need. This position will remain open until filled.
