The University of Virginia School of Education and Human Development (EHD) seeks an educator at the rank of assistant or associate professor (non-tenure eligible) whose expertise will advance the Department of Human Service’s Youth and Social Innovation (YSI) (B.S.Ed.) program. The successful candidate will demonstrate evidence of effective college teaching experience in courses related to child/youth development or studies. We expect that the successful candidate will be an excellent instructor and student advisor who works collaboratively with the YSI program director and EHD faculty colleagues to provide exceptional educational experiences for students. This is a 9-month, salaried, non-tenure eligible faculty position with the possibility of renewal.

The incumbent: will work collaboratively with faculty colleagues, both within and outside the School of Education & Human Development, to support the continued development of the YSI program; will teach one or more of the core/required courses and one or more existing elective courses in the YSI curriculum; may have the opportunity to develop a new course in an area specialization that complements current offerings; will serve as a faculty advisor for YSI majors; will contribute to institutional service activities at the program, department, school, and/or university level as assigned and to professional service activities; and will attend YSI Program, Human Services Department, and School of Education & Human Development faculty meetings. Load is set annually between the department chair and faculty member consistent with the School’s Load Planning policy.

Required Qualifications:
  • Doctoral degree in child/youth development or studies, such as human development, developmental psychology, sociology or a closely related discipline that included a primary focus on youth.
  • Prior college teaching experience related to youth development or studies
  • Evidence of ability to implement a variety of pedagogical techniques appropriate for academically diverse learners
  • Evidence of commitment to diversity, equity and advancing understanding and outcomes for underrepresented groups


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Expertise or experience teaching courses in areas that complement current program faculty, such as: the family context of youth development; non-educational youth policy (e.g., justice, mental health); or leadership in youth-led or youth-serving organizations
  • Experience providing academic and career advising to undergraduate students
  • Proven record of collaboration with diverse groups of students and faculty
  • Ability to use technology in innovative ways to enhance instruction (e.g., tools within learning management systems such as Canvas; simulation)


Physical Demands
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
