Job Description

The School of Plant and Environmental Sciences (SPES) in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) at Virginia Tech seeks to fill an academic year (AY, 9-month) tenure-track faculty position in Byproduct Management and Use in Agriculture. The incumbent will be expected to develop an internationally-recognized and externally-funded research program on the chemistry, bioavailability, fate and transport of chemical constituents (e.g., C, N, P, and contaminants) in land-applied agricultural, municipal, and industrial byproducts (e.g., animal manures, biosolids, food and paper processing sludges, water treatment residuals, combustion ashes, vegetative wastes). The incumbent may work in undisturbed (e.g., agricultural) and disturbed (e.g., urban and rural mined) landscapes. Research may address issues such as climate change, soil and water quality, revegetation of disturbed sites, and food chain impacts. The incumbent will be expected to maintain an active Hatch project. Extension programming should be developed to address waste processing alternatives (i.e., composting, anaerobic digestion) and beneficial use. The expected clientele will be waste generators (wastewater and water treatment), byproduct applicators, commercial composters, regulatory agencies, local government decision makers, landowners and managers and citizens. The incumbent is expected to work collaboratively with colleagues in SPES, at Virginia Tech Agricultural Research and Extension Centers, in other units at Virginia Tech, at other universities, and with industry partners. International work is encouraged. The incumbent is expected to serve on SPES and CALS committees, participate in SPES and CALS community activities and be a good citizen of SPES, CALS, and Virginia Tech and to contribute to the overall institutional mission of service to Virginia stakeholders.

Appointment: Assistant Professor; 50% research, 40% extension and 10% service. Research will focus on processing, use and management of by-products for use in agriculture and urban soils and the extension program will be focused on educational materials and activities designed to teach by-product producers and users how to effectively use products in agricultural and urban soils for nutrient management and to improve soil resiliency. Service will include serving on committees, service to professional organizations and participation in SPES and CALS collegial community activities.
