Mission or Goal of Unit: The mission of the Department of Biostatistics is to improve human health through methodological research, graduate education and collaboration with health science researchers on biostatistical methods and applications. Our focus includes designing and helping conduct novel clinical trials for investigating potential cancer therapies. We collaborate with public health research teams on complicated hierarchical, multifaceted health problem. As educators, we aim to train the next generation of biostatisticians, bioinformaticists and data scientists in methodological, collaborative and leadership skills.
Chief Purpose of this position: The Department of Biostatistics at Virginia Commonwealth University invites applications for a tenure eligible assistant professor position. We are seeking applicants who will teach one of the required course in the doctoral program. These courses include Mathematical Statistics, Biostatistical Computing, Analysis of Biomedical Data, Clinical Trials, Advanced Inference, Survival Analysis, Spatial analysis, Biostatistical Methods, and Mixed Models & Longitudinal Data Analysis. In addition to contributing to the teaching mission, the candidate should maintain a research program in the design and statistical analysis of high-throughput genomic data (e.g., single-cell sequencing, proteomics, metagenomics/ microbiome, and other ‘omics’ technologies), bioinformatics, computational biology, computer science, Bayesian statistics, data mining, longitudinal and hierarchical modeling, nonparametric methods, survival analysis, and statistical computing or in closely related areas. The candidate will have an opportunity to mentor and train graduate students.
Position Responsibilities:
Teaching The faculty member will have teaching responsibilities in Biostatistical graduate programs. The faculty member should have interdisciplinary research interests that complement the program. In addition, faculty will mentor capstone projects of MPH students and/or supervise dissertation research.
Research The faculty are expected to develop interdisciplinary collaborations to enhance the research program in the Department. Service Faculty members will serve on Departmental, College, and/or University committees as necessary, as well as in a professional capacity in their field (e.g., reviewer, conference organizer, etc.)
Required Qualifications:
Ph.D. in Biostatistics, Statistics, Computer Sciences or an equivalent terminal degree by the start date.
Record of peer-reviewed publications and conference dissemination demonstrating expertise in the faculty area of research
Applicants should be committed to teaching excellence, have the potential for establishing collaborations across the University, as well as develop and lead a multidisciplinary, independent research program and secure external grant funding.
Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.
Preferred Qualifications:
Postdoctoral research training experience is strongly preferred.
