The Writing and Rhetoric Program at the University of Virginia invites applications for three Assistant Professors of English, general faculty, beginning August 25, 2023. These are three-year, tenure-ineligible appointments with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon available funding, satisfactory performance, and need for the positions. Responsibilities will include teaching three courses per semester, typically two first-year writing courses and one intermediate or advanced writing or rhetoric course, and departmental service. Assistant professors on the general faculty, after serving for six years, become eligible for promotion to the rank of associate (tenure-ineligible) and afterward to full professor (tenure-ineligible).
A PhD in Rhetoric and Composition, English, Writing Studies or a related field or an MFA in Creative Writing is required for this position. We prefer applicants with experience in teaching composition, including experience teaching intermediate and advanced Writing or Rhetoric courses that may contribute to our planned minor in public writing and rhetoric. We are also interested in applicants with administrative experience in a Writing and Rhetoric-focused program.
Ideal applicants will demonstrate a commitment to supporting and developing diverse communities. They will have experience or teaching expertise in one or more of the following areas:
working with students from historically underserved groups (e.g. first-generation students, low-income students, veterans, students of color, native and indigenous students, and LGBTQ+ students)
teaching cultural rhetorics (e.g. African American, Asian American, Latinx, Native American, Disability, Queer, and others)
developing student experiences in digital writing and media
creating community-engagement courses and partnerships
encouraging writing across the curriculum/writing in the disciplines.
The Writing and Rhetoric Program is part of the English Department. It is a growing, energetic program whose faculty have a rich range of interests, including inquiry-based writing instruction, public writing and rhetoric, and the areas mentioned above.
