The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Virginia is seeking candidates for a tenure eligible Assistant Professor position to start September 2023. This clinical faculty position is responsible for providing exceptional patient care in the management of orthopaedic musculoskeletal oncology and trauma conditions with a commitment to musculoskeletal research. Qualified applicants must have demonstrated clinical expertise and the ability to perform quality basic scientific or clinical research. Candidates must have an MD and be board-eligible or board-certified. Fellowships in the sub-specialties of Orthopaedic Trauma and Musculoskeletal Oncology (2 fellowships) are required as well as evidence of academic productivity. Salary and tenure status are dependent upon qualifications. The position will remain open until filled.

This position will manage bone and soft-tissue tumors, benign and malignant, primary, recurrent and metastatic as well as tumor-like conditions of the bone. This musculoskeletal oncology role will be supported by a part-time senior musculoskeletal oncologist who will help provide mentorship. The goal in dealing with malignant bone and soft tissue tumors of the musculoskeletal system is to save both life and limb, while maximizing the function of the limb. This position will work closely with members of the Cancer Center’s multidisciplinary team that could include surgical oncologists, vascular surgeons, neurosurgeons, thoracic surgeons, urologists and plastic surgeons.

The position will also participate with the Orthopaedic Trauma Division which currently has three surgeons and two physician assistants to manage the patient population. The Orthopaedic Trauma Division works collaboratively with the UVA Emergency Medicine team. Training and exposure in the broad range of surgical techniques is preferable, particularly with specialization in axial skeletal fractures, extremity nonunion and malunion, pelvic and acetabular fractures and complex poly-trauma management. The Orthopaedic Trauma Division has tremendous experience with fractures and is highly integrated with general surgery, hand surgery, spine surgery, and neurosurgery trauma teams.

The selected candidate will join a group of 30 orthopaedic faculty. The candidate will share emergency orthopaedic call coverage at a Level 1 quaternary care trauma center, and will see patients in our newly constructed UVA Orthopaedic Center Ivy Road, a 200,000 square foot facility housing all adult orthopaedic subspecialties, physical therapy, outpatient operating rooms, an imaging center, conference space and prosthetics and orthotics. The candidate will perform surgery in both the in-patient and the out-patient areas of the UVA Health System.
