The Department of Education and Counseling in the College of Education, Health, and Human Services invites applications for the tenure-track position (F0035) at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning August 10, 2025.

The successful candidate will teach courses in literacy education, particularly as it relates to educator preparation and community engagement. We are seeking a dynamic faculty member eager to collaborate on initiatives and partnerships related to literacy teaching and learning with our community, school, and state.

Professional responsibilities include teaching nine credit hours of literacy-related graduate courses each semester, supervision of students within practicum-based settings, advising students enrolled in the program, engaging in scholarly research and professional activities, and active collaboration with colleagues and community partners to design courses and programming with a focus on careful integration of reading sciences and promotion of educational equity.

Job Requirements:

Minimum Requirements:
  • Earned doctorate from an accredited university in Reading and Literacy Studies or a closely related field. ABD candidates will be considered.
  • At least 3 years of experience and excellence in teaching in PreK-12 settings where teaching of reading was a priority, with preference for specific experiences and/or expertise working as a reading specialist and/or literacy instructional coach.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of, and experience in, reading instruction, including evidence-based reading instruction.
  • Experience and expertise in providing literacy education to in-service educators.
  • Experience in supervising field-based student practicum placements.
  • Currently possess or be eligible for Virginia state teaching license.
  • Experience in online teaching in a higher education setting.
  • Experience in the use of course learning management platforms such as Canvas.
  • Proven record of engagement with literacy professional organizations.
  • Ability to support adult learners from diverse backgrounds with strong, student-centered, and inclusive instructional methods.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.


Additional Information:

This position is a full-time, tenure track instructional faculty position. Salary will be commensurate with credentials and experience. A successful criminal background investigation is required. AmeriCorps, Peace Corps, and other national service alumni are encouraged to apply.
