Job Description

The School of Plant and Environmental Sciences (SPES) in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) at Virginia Tech seeks to fill an academic year (AY, 9-month) tenure-track faculty position focused on organic and sustainable vegetable crops production. The incumbent will develop an internationally-respected and externally-funded research program to promote organic and sustainable practices for vegetable crops production. Potential areas of research may include nutrient management, soil health, cultivar evaluation, cultural practices, diversified and novel cropping systems, and weed and pest control. The incumbent is expected to work and coordinate with other faculty including those in soil science, weed science, entomology, and plant pathology. The incumbent should also work in collaboration with the staff of Homefield Farms at Virginia Tech, faculty members at Virginia Tech Agricultural Research and Extension Centers (ARECs) and colleagues at other universities. Research may focus on large or medium-scale vegetable production as well as small-scale producers catering to farmers’ markets and agritourism. The incumbent will also teach two classes including a class in organic and sustainable vegetable crops production and the Sustainable Agriculture Practicum class. The incumbent will serve on SPES and CALS committees, participate in SPES and CALS community activities and be a good citizen of SPES, CALS, and the University and contribute to the overall institutional mission of service to Virginia stakeholders. International engagement and recognition are encouraged and expected as your career advances.

Appointment: Assistant Professor; 60% research, 30% teaching and 10% service. Conducting research in organic and sustainable vegetable crops production and teaching two classes related to sustainable vegetable and organic vegetable crops. Service will include serving on committees, service to professional organizations and participation in SPES and CALS collegial community activities.

Required Qualifications

● Ph.D. in horticulture, crop science, plant science, or a closely aligned discipline
● Demonstrated strong communication skills
● A commitment to mentoring students, diversity and inclusion

Preferred Qualifications

● Organic vegetable crop research experience
● Teaching experience
● Experience in publishing research
● Experience in grant writing and submission
