Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE), Department of Learning and Innovation, is seeking an experienced professional to provide leadership and technical expertise, facilitate policy development and implementation, represent the department as needed, administer programs for the Division of Instruction, and provide technical assistance to the Board of Education. Pursuant to Sections 2.2-3114 and 2.23115 of the Code of Virginia, the position of Assistant Superintendent for Instruction has been designated to file by the Code of Virginia, an annual “Statement of Economic Interests” form.

Minimum Qualifications

• Knowledge of Virginia’s educational accountability program, particularly the Standards of Learning and assessment programs; curriculum and instructional practices; local, state, and federal education policies and procedures; and uses of educational technology for teaching and learning.
• Ability to manage large scale instructional improvement programs and to communicate complex information to various audiences orally and in writing.
• Ability to supervise and evaluate staff.
• Ability to establish and manage budgets.
• Experience in public education administration at the management or executive level; administering comprehensive instructional programs and school improvement planning; and working with the general public, administrators, and government officials to resolve educational issues.
• Experience in budget allocation and management and evaluation of staff.

Preferred Qualifications:

• An advanced college degree in Education, in Education Administration/Supervision, Education Leadership, or a related field preferred.
