The Department of Public Health Sciences in the University of Virginia School of Medicine seeks applicants for a tenured or tenure-eligible Associate or Full Professor of Public Health Sciences conduct research on health disparities, the social determinants of health, and health equity. The faculty position provides the opportunity to collaborate with others in the School of Data Science and the School of Education & Human Development as part of a broad group of “cluster” hires focusing on innovative, interdisciplinary research to address disparities and inequalities.

The successful candidate will undertake research, teaching and partnerships to harness data to further equitable access to societal and health care resources, information, and opportunities to improve health and quality of life . A particular emphasis will be on studies that improve the lives of the citizens of the Commonwealth of Virginia, which is racially, economically and geographically diverse - from the urban areas of northern Virginia to Appalachia.

The Department of Public Health Sciences (PHS) in the School of Medicine offers a vibrant academic home with access to a rich array of datasets and support services for research including geospatial analysis, advanced expertise in healthcare claims data, digital health and telemedicine, public health genomics, and community engagement. The Department offers comprehensive and multi-disciplinary scientific and analytical support to the University of Virginia School of Medicine, and to other researchers across the university, through its Divisions of Biomedical Informatics; Biostatistics; and Translational Research and Applied Statistics.

PHS faculty foster multi-faceted research and educational collaborations with clinicians, researchers, other professionals, and communities to improve health equity and overall health and well-being. PHS faculty also work closely with public health officials and community partners at the local, state, and national levels to address the social determinants of health, focusing on such topics as cancer prevention, diabetes, Covid and pandemic-related research, rural health disparities, mental health, and addiction. The Department offers two master degrees, an MS in Clinical Research and an MPH. Successful candidates will contribute to the design and implementation of the graduate education curriculum; teach intermediate and advanced graduate level methods courses, conduct research, and advance scholarship in their area of expertise.

Successful candidates will have a PhD or other doctoral degree in epidemiology, social sciences, health services research, public health, engineering, or a related field with a record of research focusing on the social determinants of health, health equity, prevention, quality of life, or related topics.

Candidates are particularly sought who have the following:

• A record of excellence in research, peer-reviewed publications, and a funding record as appropriate for the candidate’s rank.

• Success moving scientific discovery into new research directions and applications in patients, communities, and populations.

• Experience working with community stakeholders and community advisory boards in an engaged research process.

• A collaborative style that fosters and supports teamwork, change and innovation.

• Ability to pursue high standards related to one’s research, clinical investigations and service, and other areas of responsibility.
