Associate Professor or Professor of African-American and African Studies

The Carter G. Woodson Institute for African American and African Studies at the University of Virginia seeks to fill a tenured position at the Associate or Full Professor rank in the fields of African and African diaspora literature and/or Carceral Studies. We welcome the applications of scholars from a wide variety of disciplines, areas, and periods of specialization. For this “Fellows to Faculty” position we are inviting those who have held a Pre- or Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Carter G. Woodson Institute for African American and African Studies in any year to apply.

As candidates will be aware from their fellowship experience, the Woodson Institute is the main hub for exciting and pathbreaking work at the university in Global Black Studies. The department now has twenty core faculty members who maintain rich curricula for undergraduate majors and minors and graduate certificate programs, in addition to the internationally famous program for pre- and postdoctoral fellows. The Woodson also sponsors and participates in multiple collaborations and initiatives across UVA. In addition to the expectation that the successful candidate will teach two courses per semester at the undergraduate and graduate levels, we hope that this scholar will also be able to serve the Woodson in administrative leadership roles.

Qualifications

To be eligible, applicants must hold a Ph.D. in a relevant field, have at least three years of teaching experience, and have held a Pre- or Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Carter G. Woodson Institute for African American and African Studies. Applicants will be assessed in terms of their demonstrated record and potential for excellence in research, teaching and service.
