The Virginia State Bar, the regulatory agency for the legal profession in Virginia, has an immediate opening for a highly motivated and experienced trial attorney to work as an Assistant Bar Counsel. The Office of Bar Counsel regulates the legal profession through the review, investigation, and trial of disciplinary cases. Complaints of attorney misconduct must be handled fairly, thoroughly, and promptly. Assistant Bar Counsel have a varied and challenging case load within a highly collaborative office environment. Responsibilities include reviewing complaints of misconduct; analyzing investigative reports and presenting recommendations; and trying misconduct cases before district committees, the Disciplinary Board, and circuit courts. The Assistant Bar Counsel will also train participants in the disciplinary system, including planning and presenting ethics and related programs at the annual disciplinary conference; present Continuing Legal Education programs to attorneys; and participate in special projects in the Office of Bar Counsel. This position is required to work in the Richmond downtown office.
Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must have a Juris Doctorate Degree from an accredited law school and be an active member in good standing with the Virginia State Bar with no disciplinary sanctions. The candidate must have experience as a practicing attorney, including at least five years of trial experience. Experience in a broad range of practice areas, both civil and criminal, is preferred. The successful candidate will demonstrate exceptional litigation, writing, and legal research skills; an understanding of the Rules of Professional Conduct; the ability to analyze complex issues and make sound recommendations; and the ability to work under pressure and within tight deadlines.
