The Department of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the University of Virginia School of Medicine seeks candidates for the Bonner-Lowry Professor and Research Director of the Division of Perceptual Studies (DOPS), to start in early 2025.

We invite applications from accomplished scholars of parapsychology and consciousness research, with a track record of rigorous investigation of extraordinary human experiences, such as the mind’s relationship to the body and the possibility of consciousness surviving physical death.

The ideal candidate will be internationally recognized for their contributions to the field, with a reputation for academic integrity, leadership and mentorship, and professional collegiality. They will demonstrate a proven track record in designing and implementing research programs, securing funding, and catalyzing collaboration and innovation.

This role will play a pivotal part in shaping the next generation of DOPS research and the Division’s successful collaboration with consciousness researchers worldwide. Reporting directly to the Chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences, the Bonner-Lowry Professor and DOPS Research Director will be expected to:

● Work with DOPS faculty, including the neuroimaging lab director, to develop and implement a comprehensive and collaborative research agenda for the Division;

● Successfully secure grants and other funding to support DOPS research initiatives;

● Collaborate with administrative leadership to co-implement a strategic plan for DOPS, including the development of junior faculty, efficient management of space allocations, expanded measurable impact of DOPS research, long-term financial sustainability, and increased visibility of DOPS research;

● Work with administrative leadership to ensure effective communication and collaboration with the DOPS advisory board and departmental leadership.

The Research Director will represent DOPS within the department, to members of the broader scientific community, to donors and prospective donors, and to potential partners and collaborators worldwide.

Qualifications

Ideal applicants should be a full professor in rank by the time of appointment. Associate professors are encouraged to apply, as well as those already in the rank of full or endowed professor. Salary is commensurate with experience.

Pending approval by the endowed chair committee, the appointment will be made at the endowed professor rank. Candidates will be assessed in terms of demonstrated excellence in their field, national and international stature, scholarship and academic contributions, and alignment with the health system’s ASPIRE values.

● Education: Ph.D. or M.D.

● Experience: At least 6 years of relevant experience
