The University of Virginia Bookstore is seeking a flexible and well-organized Part-time Buyers Assistant to perform a wide variety of duties in University retail stores. Responsibilities include building purchase orders, ordering products, approving invoices, resolving merchandise discrepancies, merchandising and managing inventory, assisting customers, and operating cash registers. Work is assigned at the task level, and the incumbent will work under direct supervision.

  • Greet and offer assistance to customers.
  • Recognize levels of stock on sales floor and replenish accordingly.
  • Continually fix and neaten sales floor area and replace tags as directed.
  • Respond to customer inquiries on the sales floor and over the telephone.
  • Receive designated purchase orders and daily transfers.
  • Communicate with internal and external vendors, staff and students at the University.
  • Keep stock room clean, safe, and well organized.
  • Assist in other departments during peak seasons.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • At least one year of prior work experience.
  • Must possess strong communication and active listening skills to provide exceptional customer service.
  • Knowledge of cash handling and math skills are required.
  • Demonstrated excellence in decision making is required.
  • Strong organizational skills are required.
  • Applicants must have working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Outlook, and Microsoft Word.
  • The ability to work weekend shifts is required.

The selected candidate will be required to complete all necessary background checks.

Physical Demands:

Must be able to stand or sit for periods of time. Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds.
