Chief Purpose of this position: Since 1975, VCU Massey Cancer Center has conducted lifesaving research with prestigious designation from the National Cancer Institute. NCI designation means that we are helping lead the nation’s progress against cancer. Like NCI, our mission is to eliminate the suffering and death caused by cancer. Harnessing our research members’ intellectual curiosity and scientific expertise, we have three core programs through which they collaborate to conduct cancer research: Cancer Biology, Cancer Prevention & Control, and Developmental Therapeutics. Through community-engaged research, Massey is developing methods to eliminate health disparities and ensure equal access to cutting-edge cancer prevention and care. The newly-formed Cancer Survivorship Program aims to develop and employ a comprehensive set of initiatives to address the medical needs of cancer survivors.
The VCU Massey Cancer Survivorship Program is seeking to hire an Academic Clinical Psychologist to build a comprehensive psycho-oncology program within Cancer Survivorship. Responsibilities will include direct patient care to provide 1:1 psycho-oncology services, overseeing the growth of the tobacco cessation program within VCU Massey, and the development, coordination, and supervision of cancer survivorship research conducted throughout the University.
Position Responsibilities:
Clinical | Responsible for providing psycho-oncology services and will oversee the growth of the tobacco cessation program within VCU Massey Cancer Center. Will develop, coordinate, and supervise cancer survivorship research conducted at VCU.
Research | Contribute to VCU’s national reputation through research and scholarship (extramural funding, high quality publications, citations, and national recognition as through honorific awards and committee leadership) and maintain active involvement in appropriate national or international organizations and bodies.
Responsibilities include:
Collaboration with the Massey Cancer Center Clinical Trials Office to develop and implement scientific protocols to oversee activities involved in the collection, compilation, documentation, and analysis of data
Maintain strict compliance with Good Clinical Practices (GCP) and all current laws, regulations, guidance, policies, and procedures developed by the Institutional Review Board (IRB); Code of Federal Regulations (CFR); and all federal, state, and local regulatory entities
Oversight of active research protocols including data collection, consenting of research subjects, supervision of other research personnel, and collaboration with VCU research faculty on other survivorship research efforts
Service | Serves on institutional committees, study sections, review groups, as a journal editor, or editorial boards.
Required Qualifications:
Ph.D. in Psychology
Licensed Clinical Psychologist with Ph.D. level training in research
License to practice in the Commonwealth of Virginia or the ability to obtain licensure prior to start date
Prior training in tobacco cessation interventions
Experience working with cancer populations
Prior experience with health behavior interventions
Experience working in an academic medical environment
Outstanding academic writing skills and demonstrated track record in writing peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts and/or extramural grant submissions
Experience in the development and management of research protocols and IRB submissions
Excellent interpersonal skills; capable of interdisciplinary collaboration
Proven trainee and mentorship skills
Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU
