Mission or Goal of Unit: The mission of the VCU Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery is to both provide the Mid-Atlantic’s most advanced, patient-oriented, cost-effective and safe cardiothoracic services, as well as to create the finest training environment for the region’s future cardiothoracic specialists. The current environment increasingly mandates leading both regional and national quality initiatives in cardiothoracic surgery. The division is committed to enhance diversity among its faculty staff and students.
Chief Purpose of this position: The Department of Surgery at VCU and VCU Health System is actively recruiting for a full-time board certified/board eligible cardiac surgeon for the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at VCU Medical Center and affiliated campuses. We are seeking an academically focused surgeon with excellent training in adult acquired cardiac and thoracic disorders to join a well-established practice. The division performs all aspects of adult cardiothoracic surgery. This is an open rank, term, dually appointed faculty position.
Position Responsibilities:
Clinical Faculty member will have clinical responsibility in the care of the cardiothoracic patients on the MCV campus of VCU, the community sites, and any other facilities in the VCU Network. This position will be responsible for the development of an active surgical practice with the support of the Division and Department’s leadership. Clinical responsibilities may be extended to a shared time between VCU and VA Medical Centers.
Teaching Faculty member will have teaching responsibilities in cardiac surgery for surgeons, medical specialties, medical and other students.
Research Clinical research will be encouraged. Opportunities for intramural and extramural funding will be explored with a goal towards extramural funding. Collaboration with basic science faculty in School of Medicine will be encouraged.
Service Faculty member will serve on departmental, college, and/or university committees as necessary, as well as in a professional capacity in their field, e.g., reviewer, conference organizer, etc.
Required Qualifications:
Board certified/eligible in thoracic surgery
Virginia state licensure
Minimum 3 years’ clinical experience in advanced cardiac surgery
Excellent interpersonal skills with high emotional intelligence
Commitment to clinical excellence, education and clinical research
Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU
Preferred Qualifications:
Research interests in cardiovascular disorders that can lead to intramural and extramural funding
Training in adult heart failure and thoracic organ transplant preferred
