Mission or Goal of Unit: The mission of the VCU Division of Cardiothoracic surgery is to both provide the Mid-Atlantic’s most advanced, patient-oriented, cost-effective and safe cardiothoracic services, as well as to create the finest training environment for the region’s future cardiothoracic specialists. The current environment increasingly mandates leading both regional and national quality initiatives in cardiothoracic surgery. The division is committed to enhance diversity among its faculty staff and students.
Chief Purpose of this position: The Department of Surgery is recruiting for a part-time (0.36 FTE) cardiothoracic surgeon. This position will fulfill several urgent needs of this division. Duties will include clinical responsibilities in all areas of thoracic surgery. This person will be charged with the responsibility of developing a community based full service thoracic surgery program. A broad expertise in thoracic surgery with a track record of excellence is essential.
Position Responsibilities:
Clinical Develop a practice in thoracic or cardiac surgery to include call coverage coinciding with clinical FTE.
Teaching Faculty member will have teaching responsibilities in cardiothoracic surgery for surgeons, medical specialties, medical and other students.
Research Although this position has no specific assigned research responsibilities, reasonable scholarly activities, such as publications, presentations at national meetings and participation in appropriate academic organizations, are expected.
Service The faculty member will serve on departmental, College, and/or University committees as necessary, as well as in a professional capacity in their field, e.g., reviewer, conference organizer, etc.
Required Qualifications:
Virginia state licensure
Board certified or board eligible in thoracic surgery
Excellent interpersonal skills with high emotional intelligence
Commitment to clinical excellence, education and clinical research
Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU
Preferred Qualifications:
Ability to progress to an extramurally funded investigator or currently funded
Clinical experience in lung transplantation
