The University of Virginia Library seeks a C ataloger to join the UVA Library’s Metadata and Discovery Services (MDS) Team in the Scholarly Resources and Content Strategies Unit. The C ataloger will report to the MDS Manager and create bibliographic and authority records for display in t he Library’s Virgo online catalog . This is an e arly career professional librarian job opportunity. Candidates may include coursework, schoolwork, internships, etc. to meet required and preferred qualifications for this position.
Duties:
Performs cataloging and classification tasks for print and no n -print formats using the MARC Bibliographic Format, RDA, LC-PCC Policy Statements, Program for Cooperative Cataloging guidelines, Library of Congress Classification, Library of Congress S ubject H eadings , and genre/form terms
Creates name authority records according to NACO and other best practices
Proposes Library of Congress Subject Headingsaccording to Subject Heading Manual guidelines.
Uses ILS querying tools to generate data and reports
Contributes to Subject Access Enhancement initiative to further the University of Virginia Library’s commitment to diversity andinclusion
Leverages online translation tools and innovative search strategies to copy catalog foreign language material
Leads remediation projects and other special projects asneeded
Creates section cataloging policies and guidelines
Engages in service initiatives within the UVA library and broader university community
Identifies local and national areas of interest incataloging an d description and participates in relevant professional associations, working groups, task forces, and committees

R equired Qualifications
Applicants must possess one of the following: A. Master’s degree in Library Sciences from an ALA accredited program OR B. A bachelor’s degree and 4 years of experience working in a library, archives, or research institution
Knowledge of RDA content standard and the MARC Bibliographic Formats encoding standard
Experience working with bibliographic data in an Integrated Library System or online database (such as OCLC Connexion )
Ability to collaborate with diverse colleagues in a team environment
P referred Qualifications
Knowledge of library classification and subject heading policies and tools including LC Classification, the Library of Congress Subject Headings, the LC Subject Heading Manual, and Classification Web.
Knowledge of name authority work flows and the PCC NACO program
Ability to apply technology skills or software tools ( Marc Edit , ILS database reports , and programming skills are some examples ) to library records .
Ability to communicate in writing to both technical and non-technical audiences
Knowledge of at least one non-English language
