Mission or Goal of Unit:

The Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Dentistry is located in downtown Richmond, Virginia. With a 127-year history, Virginia’s only dental school provides opportunities for selected, qualified individuals to study dentistry and oral health through a doctor of dental surgery (D.D.S) program, graduate specialty training programs and a dental hygiene program. The VCU School of Dentistry is one of a small number of dental schools in the country affiliated with an academic medical center, the only dental school in the Commonwealth, and the second oldest dental school in the U.S. It is one of five health sciences academic programs on the Medical College of Virginia (MCV) Campus of VCU.

Chief Purpose of this position:

The School of Dentistry invites candidates to apply for the Chair of General Practice faculty position, which will also provide administrative oversight of the Division of Dental Hygiene, the Division of Prosthodontics, Digital Dentistry and the Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency program. The Chair will provide leadership for the educational, scholarship, patient care, and service mission of the department and the School of Dentistry. Additionally, the Chair will collaborate and participate with other units within the School of Dentistry to provide outstanding education to students as well as comprehensive patient care.

Position Responsibilities:

Serve as Department Chair for General Practice in the School of Dentistry. The chair will provide leadership and management of the department faculty and staff to include annual performance review and evaluation, mentoring for professional development to support promotion and/or tenure. The Chair will also participate in fundraising for the department in conjunction with the Associate Dean and Director of Development and Alumni Relations.

Faculty members are expected to teach in an integrated curriculum system that includes baccalaureate, graduate, and professional education. Teaching across traditional departmental lines and in multidisciplinary teams is required. The faculty member is expected to foster transformative learning that is informed by interdisciplinary and translational research, teaching, scholarship, and creative expression. The Chair will provide clinical and classroom teaching and supervision in both the predoctoral and postdoctoral clinics to include development and management of clinical and/or didactic curricula offerings.
Faculty members must demonstrate the ability to contribute to and participate in a humanistic environment of learning, as well as to adapt to change and embrace modern technologies. Faculty members must demonstrate the ability, or acquire and develop such ability, to incorporate adult learning theory, evidence-based oral health care, innovation in student learning, and critical thinking.

Research and scholarship is an expectation for all members of the School of Dentistry faculty as appropriate for their overall responsibilities and expertise. The Chair is expected to support and participate in research and scholarship of students, residents and faculty as well as to have a personal research focus appropriate for the rank of assistant, associate or full professor.

The Chair will be expected to represent the Department, the School of Dentistry, and Virginia Commonwealth University by serving on committees and task forces as requested. Participation in state and national level professional organizations as appropriate for the position and candidate’s expertise is required. Participation and/or support of the department’s participation in dentistry-related community service activities is strongly encouraged.

The Chair will provide teaching and leadership in dentistry clinics, seeing patients, working with students, and working collaboratively with other faculty and staff to promote best business practices, and increase clinic productivity.

Required Qualifications:

• Applicant must have DDS or DMD degree and be eligible for licensure in Virginia
• Certificate of completion of Advanced Education in General Dentistry or other Specialty Program
• Strong record of scholarly achievement, research, and publications
• Experience in dental education, resident program administration, or other leadership experience
• Demonstrated ability to adapt to change and embrace modern technologies
• Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master’s degree or PhD
• Board certification in a specialty area
• Experience working in a public university setting, preferably in a dental or medical school
• Private practice experience
• Prior experience teaching within a predoctoral curriculum (didactic and clinical)
• National service in organized dentistry
• Fundraising experience
