About the Department:
The mission of the Department of Mathematics & Economics is to provide excellent education and research opportunities to a diverse student body in order to prepare them for productive careers at industrial, governmental, and academic settings in the rapidly evolving fields of mathematics, Economics, and finance. The new specialized faculty member will join the program in June of 2023. This is a twelve (12) month tenure-track position.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Chair will serve as the chief administrative officer of the Department of Mathematics and Economics, and, as such, is expected to provide positive leadership across all facets of the department missions as well as participate in research and teaching activities.
The primary responsibilities for this leadership position include;
Recruitment, mentoring, development, evaluation and promotion of faculty members;
Coordination, fairness and oversight of major departmental responsibilities;
Fostering linkage with external groups to strengthen ties with industry, state, federal, and local agencies;
Cultivate the departmental strategic plan for assessment, instruction, research, and service;
Overall supervision of department staff, resources, and the budget.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required for Entry:
An earned PhD in Mathematics or Statistics by date of hire is required*.
Must warrant an appointment as a tenured associate/full professor in the department;
Must have an established record of excellence in teaching undergraduate and graduate level courses in Mathematics and/or Statistics.
The successful applicant should be able to provide evidence of records of research, grantsmanship and potential for administration.
The appointed individual also must possess excellent oral and written communications skills;
Experience in teaching and working with persons of culturally and ethnically diverse backgrounds required.
*Virginia State University requires that faculty be appropriately credentialed to teach assigned courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. VSU demonstrates compliance with its Faculty Credentialing Policy #2301 for all applicable education, experience, licensure and certification requirements in the selection and hiring of its faculty.
Preferred, but Not Required:
Candidates at the full Professor rank are preferred, but others will be considered.
Administrative experience, including direct supervision of faculty, staff, budgets, and program development, and accomplishments.
Preference will also be given to individuals who can provide evidence of experience in supervising research and in developing modern teaching pedagogy to students at all levels of academic ability.
