This program was developed to provide Minority Professionals who hold master's degrees or Graduate Students still in graduate school (master's or doctoral students) the opportunity to gain collegiate teaching experience within the Virginia Community College System.
The program matches working professionals or graduate students with part-time teaching assignments at a nearby community college.
Minority Professionals or Graduate Students will share their experience, expertise and educational background with our students as regular classroom instructors. Support and colleagueship are provided by a full-time VCCS faculty mentor and the host college. Minority Professionals or Graduate Students are paid at the regular part-time adjunct professor rate for their service while in the program.
With this valuable teaching experience, Professionals or Students, will gain experience with which they can become more competitive for full-time professorships at any community college or university.
This program aims to recruit working Minority Professionals or Graduate Students who represent varied ethnic, racial and social backgrounds who are interested in teaching or related careers.
Virginia's Community Colleges serve a dynamic and diverse student body where one out of every three people is a minority, mirroring the commonwealth's general population. However, our teaching faculty is less diverse: only 19 percent are minorities.
To ensure that our community colleges are accessible and supportive, we are striving to build a faculty that resembles and values the experiences of our student body. While this program is open to all qualified professionals, a special emphasis is placed on recruiting members from ethnically diverse backgrounds.
Minimum Qualifications:
Individuals who have earned a master's degree are eligible to apply for the Minority Professional Teaching Fellows program.
Individuals who have not yet earned a graduate degree, but are currently enrolled in a graduate degree program (master's and doctoral students) can apply for the Graduate Student Teaching Fellows program if they have earned at least 18 hours of graduate credit in the subject area/discipline where they are interested in teaching.
There are no exceptions to the requirement to have completed 18 graduate credits in the subject area/discipline to meet appropriate accreditation credentialing requirements.
International Individuals on F-1 Visas are not eligible to participate in these programs due to Federal Employment laws.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in the use of interactive instructional technologies in a classroom or online.
Experience in learning management systems such as: Canvas, Banner, Peoplesoft, Blackboard or related systems.
