The University of Virginia's College at Wise, located in the beautiful mountains of southwestern Virginia and a division of the University of Virginia, invites applications for a Childcare Center Program Director. This position is responsible for the daily operations and overall management of the UVA Wise childcare center, as well as the planning and directing of care services for the participants in the program with the participation of the staff. Duties include, but are not limited to the following.

Program Management and Development
  • Ensures the UVA Wise childcare center always operates within the guidelines of UVA WISE policies and procedures and the Licensure Standards of the Virginia Department of Education, and any local, state, and/or federal mandates and guidelines of other regulatory agencies.
  • Ensures that Health, Environment, and Fire Inspection standards are met and meets with Licensing Inspectors when necessary.
  • Maintains licensing standards, required documentation and paperwork, annual licensing renewal, and licensing visits.
  • Manages all activities pertaining to budgeting, curriculum development and implementation, developmental practices, and child enrollment procedures
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding participants, their families, and or caregivers.
  • Supervises all aspects of staff work, including:
    • Conducting interviews
    • Conducting training and orientation for newly hired employees
    • Ensuring that staff have complete documents and papers necessary for employment and licensing
    • Supervising, scheduling, and coordinating the activities of the Program Leader- Afternoon Supervisor and all childcare staff to ensure the needs of participants and families are met
    • Conducting monthly staff meetings
    • Conducting annual staff evaluations
    • Maintaining staff training records in accordance with state regulations
  • Participates in conferences, training sessions, and meetings relating to areas of assigned responsibility.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Child Care
  • Ensures proper procedures are followed, including:
    • Enrollment procedures
    • Parent orientations
    • Waiting list maintenance
    • Tours new parents around the facility
  • Substituting in various classrooms, which could be for extended periods of time, as well as, assisting in meal prep for classrooms.
  • Conducting observations and providing coaching to teachers and assistants regularly.


General Requirements
  • Works in a safety-conscious manner, which ensures that safe work practices are used in order not to pose a risk to self or others in the workplace. Reports any safety violations or hazards to the supervisor.
  • Complies with UVA Wise policies and procedures and local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Adheres to a drug-free workplace.
  • Interacts in a professional, compassionate manner with children, families, visitors, volunteers, and co-workers to provide a safe and caring environment that ensures self-respect, personal dignity, rights, and physical safety of each person.
  • Maintains a dependable attendance record and adheres to standards of cleanliness, grooming hygiene, and dress code.

General qualifications for the Program Director are outlined in 8VAC20-780-180 of the State Board of Education Standards for Licensed Child Daycare Centers and include:
  • Being of good character and reputation;
  • Capable of carrying out assigned responsibilities;
  • Capable of accepting training and supervision; and
  • Capable of communicating effectively both orally and in writing as applicable to the job responsibility.
  • Staff who work directly with children shall be capable of communicating with emergency personnel.


The Program Director must be at least 21 years of age and meet one of the education and experience options below.

1. A graduate degree in a child-related field such as elementary education, nursing, or recreation from a college or university and six months of programmatic experience;

2. An endorsement or bachelor's degree in a child-related field such as elementary education, nursing, or recreation from a college or university and one year of programmatic experience; STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION STANDARDS FOR LICENSED Page 22 of 85 CHILD DAY CENTERS (8VAC20-780) 10/2021 8VAC20-780-190. Program director qualifications.

3. Forty-eight semester hours or 72 quarter hours of college credit from a college or university of which 12 semester hours or 18 quarter hours are in child-related subjects and one year of programmatic experience;

4. Two years of programmatic experience with one year in a staff supervisory capacity and at least one of the following education backgrounds:

a. A one-year early childhood certificate from a college or university that consists of at least 30 semester hours;

b. A child development credential that requires: (1) High school program completion or the equivalent; (2) 480 hours working with children in a group which could include a supervised practicum; (3) Determination of competency in promoting children's development, providing a safe and healthy environment, managing the classroom environment or childhood program, and promoting positive and productive relationships with parents or guardians; and (4) At least 120 hours of child-related training taught by an individual or by an organization with expertise in early childhood teacher preparation provided that the training facilitator: (a) Documents the student's mastery and competence; (b) Observes the student's application of competence in a classroom setting; (c) Has a combination of at least six years of education (leading to a degree or credential in a child-related field) or programmatic experience; and (d) Has at least 12 semester hours or 180 hours in a child-related field, a child development credential or equivalent, and two years of programmatic experience with one year in a staff supervisory capacity; or

c. A certification of qualification from an internationally or nationally recognized Montessori organization.

  • Walking, standing, talking, and hearing. The employee must be able to hear children at all times, must be able to see the children with a quick glance, and must be able to physically respond immediately.
  • Ability to routinely lift children, move furniture in an early childhood classroom, and sustain long hours of active work for 8 hours or more.
  • Ability to lift 40 pounds.
  • Agility to move quickly and keep pace with young children.


Mental Demands
  • Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written).
  • Ability to maintain emotional control under stress.
  • Ability to remain alert and energetic for 8 hours or more.


Travel
  • Minimal travel required. Some travel to and from campus and scheduled trainings.


Other
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.


Compensation will be based on a combination of education, experience, and skill set at a range of $55,000 - $75,000. A full state benefits package is included.
