The SVCDC is an interdisciplinary clinic that has been providing services to children and families from birth to 21 years of age for more than 40 years. The clinic addresses concerns regarding education, behavior, health, emotions, development, and the parent-child relationship. We serve a broad range of clients that include foster children and high-risk families. Our primary goal is to ensure children receive the support and evaluation services needed to help them maximize their potential. The clinic’s hours are Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

The Shenandoah Valley Child Development Clinic is one of many programs and clinics within the Institute for Innovation in Health and Human Services (IIHHS). IIHHS is a forward-thinking and dynamic organization that strives to cultivate a shared sense of purpose in building healthier and safer communities where all individuals can thrive and flourish. IIHHS is housed within JMU’s College of Health and Behavioral Studies (CHBS).

Duties and Responsibilities:

The clinical psychology fellowship program is a one-year, full-time training experience. The fellowship is administered by the SVCDC in the Institute of Innovation in Health and Human Services (IIHHS) of JMU.

The Clinical Psychology Postdoctoral fellow is expected to conduct psychological assessments, which include: gathering pertinent cognitive, social, emotional, and behavioral information through record review and interviews with parents; administering, scoring, interpreting standardized and informal instruments, and writing comprehensive psychological reports.

The postdoctoral fellow works with interdisciplinary team members to develop appropriate interventions and recommendations that are based on the results of psychological assessments. The postdoctoral fellow provides care coordination services by participating in feedback sessions with parents and serving as a resource to parents, schools, agencies, and the clinic evaluation team. There may be opportunities, if time allows, to engage in individual or family therapy.

If the candidate is interested in pursuing research, they may, but this will not exceed more than 20% of their duties.

Didactic opportunities are available and encouraged. In addition, an approved fellow will be provided 1-2 hours of formal supervision every week, as well as approximately 1 hour of monthly group supervision with other psychology fellows as available. Monthly group supervision may include opportunities for case presentation, case consultation, didactics, and professional development. Guest lectures to approved courses are also available.

The postdoctoral fellow position is eligible for benefits as JMU AP Faculty. This position may be eligible to continue after the completion of the one-year fellowship, contingent upon the individual’s performance and attainment of Clinical Psychologist licensure in Virginia. This position is anticipated to begin between June-August 2026, but can be flexible if internship duties conflict with the proposed start date.

Qualifications:

• Completion of clinical psychology doctoral studies from an accredited college or university.
• Completion of APA internship.
• Experience and/or knowledge of developmental issues and childhood behavioral and emotional disorders or experience working with children is preferred.
• Experience/understanding of issues in the assessment of individuals from all backgrounds.
