The University of Virginia’s Center for Diabetes Technology is seeking candidates for a Clinical Research Coordinator 2, Licensed or Non-Licensed. The Center for Diabetes Technology is a world leader in treatment of diabetes and is aimed at improving the management, monitoring, and therapies for persons with Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes.

The CDT is directed by Boris Kovatchev, PhD, a world-renowned researcher in the field of Diabetes, algorithm development and data science. Dr. Kovatchev is a regular lecturer at Universities and Conferences throughout the US and Europe. With substantial NIH funding, the Center led and successfully completed the three largest randomized Artificial Pancreas(AP) clinical trials in the World to date , including a pivotal trial aiming for regulatory clearance of a new AP System (that included the algorithm program developed at the Center), published on October 16, 2019 in the New England Journal of Medicine .

The clinical research coordinator will work closely with Dr. Dan Cox. Successful candidates will work under the training and supervision of a team of accomplished faculty members and physicians. The position coordinates and implements a 5-year multi-center (UVA and U. of Colorado) National Institute of Health (NIH) grant delivering and investigating an innovative lifestyle intervention for adults recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, working closely with the Principal Investigators, Operational Managers, and other research team members.

Clinical Research Coordinator-2 (CRC 2) is a role that requires some previous experience in clinical research. A CRC 2 will manage the basic elements of clinical trial conduct and demonstrate a solid understanding of clinical research compliance. CRC2 will be involved in most aspects of clinical research conduct and will continue to benefit from the opportunity to engage in additional on-the-job training and mentorship opportunities to continue to advance on the clinical research career path. A CRC2 works under the moderate supervision of a Principal Investigator and/or an experienced CRC and will manage a reasonable portfolio of clinical trials or research projects as assigned by a supervisor.

The successful candidate will be expected to:
  • Secure approval and maintain correspondence with regulatory entities, e.g., Internal Review Board (IRB), Clinical trials, NIH.
  • Maintain appropriate study documentation and ensure compliance with protocol guidelines and requirements of regulatory agencies.
  • Maintain quality management of the trial portfolio.
  • Recruit, screen, and enroll study participants who meet research criteria.
  • Collect basic information through scripted and non-scripted interviews.
  • Correspond with participants and addressing their issues as appropriate.
  • Editing and coordination of professional presentations, journal manuscripts and grant application submissions and revisions.
  • Plan, organize and execute tasks for a multi-center project, like minutes for weekly meetings, and ordering, storing and distributing supplies.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.


Qualified candidates must have:

Clinical Research Coordinator 2, Non-Licensed

Education : Associate’s degree required, Bachelor’s Degree Preferred. Four years of clinical research experience can be considered in lieu of a degree.
Experience : At least one year of clinical research experience. Some experience in a healthcare setting and/or knowledge of medical terminology is preferred.
Licensure : None.

Clinical Research Coordinator 2, Licensed

Education : Associate’s Degree Required; Bachelor’s Degree Preferred. Nursing Diploma may substitute for Associate’s Degree for Licensed Registered Nurse.
Experience : At least one year of clinical research experience.
Licensure : Licensed to Practice in Clinical Profession such as (but not limited to): Registered Nurse, Athletic Training, Pharmacology, Medical Technology, Physical Therapy or Registered Respiratory Therapy.

Physical Demands: This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.

Anticipated Hiring Range:
  • CRC2 Non-Licensed: $42,000-$70,000 annually commensurate with education and experience.
  • CRC2 Licensed: $68,000-$85,000 annually commensurate with education and experience.
