About the Position:

The Virginia State Police (VSP) is seeking to hire a Cloud Platform and SRE (Site Reliability Engineering) Supervisor in our Information Technology (IT) Division at our Administrative Headquarters in North Chesterfield, Virginia. The job duties for this position include but are not limited to:

• Providing advanced technical leadership and operational oversight for VSP enterprise cloud environment.
• Exercising oversight of cloud platform engineering and SRE functions that support the Agency’s accelerated cloud transformation and modernization efforts.
• Implementing enterprise cloud infrastructure standards.
• Ensuring the reliability, security, and performance of mission‑critical systems.
• Supervising a team of cloud engineers who support ongoing operations, migrations, and modernization activities.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of:

• Cloud networking fundamentals, hybrid connectivity, and security best practices
• Amazon Web Services (AWS), cloud infrastructure design principles, multi‑account environments, and cloud-native databases such as Aurora and PostgreSQL and migration strategies from Oracle.
• Container orchestration services, serverless compute, and modernization patterns.
• Disaster recovery, business continuity, and reliability engineering best practices.

Skill in:

• Designing CI/CD (Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery or Deployment) pipelines using reusable components with integrated reliability and security.
• Developing operational playbooks, DR/BCP (Disaster Recovery/Business Continuity Plan) runbooks, and reliability frameworks.
• Collaborating across enterprise technical teams (Information Security Office (ISO), Project Management Office (PMO), AppDev, Architecture, Networking, Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS).
• Troubleshooting cloud infrastructure and distributed systems.
• Implementing automation for deployment, monitoring, or operations.

Ability in/to:

• Design and implement cloud platform services in coordination with the Enterprise Architecture team.
• Lead modernization efforts using containers, serverless, and cloud-native data platforms.
• Decision making with responsibility for agency-wide cloud operations.
• Support cloud migration activities, reliability engineering, and operational readiness.
• Lead, supervise, and develop technical teams in a high‑pressure environment.
• Prioritize tasks, manage deadlines, and lead incident responses.
• Experience with cloud-native databases (Aurora, PostgreSQL) and migrating relational workloads.
• Experience developing DR/BCP strategies and reliability frameworks.
• Experience integrating CI/CD pipelines with automated reliability and security controls.
• Considerable experience in IT infrastructure and platform engineering, and hands‑on AWS architecture and implementation.
• Experience serving as a senior hands-on engineer within a team directly contributing to solution design, IaC development, and troubleshooting of complex cloud and hybrid systems.
• Experience conducting peer reviews of cloud design, code, and operational automation while authoring and committing code as part of regular workflows.
• Experience developing and maintaining reusable engineering artifacts (Terraform modules, CI/CD pipeline components, monitoring dashboards, SRE automation), and prototype and validate new services before guiding adoption across the team.
• Experience participating in on-call rotations and major incident response as a working engineer, providing advanced technical support when critical issues arise.
• Experience supervising and leading a team while remaining hands-on, prioritizing tasks, managing deadlines, mentoring engineers, and owning delivery and quality standards without stepping away from the code.
• Experience migrating VMware & Windows workloads to AWS.
• Hybrid networking experience (Direct Connect, VPN, Transit Gateway).
• Extensive experience in IT infrastructure and platform engineering, with direct AWS.
• Graduation from high school or equivalent.

Additional Considerations

• AWS professional-level certifications (Architect, DevOps) or equivalent preferred.
• Experience with cloud security tools, identity platforms, and container security preferred.
• State government IT experience and familiarity with public-sector compliance preferred.
• Knowledge of Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS), National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS), Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program (FedRAMP), or similar compliance frameworks preferred.
