College Adviser - 2023 (Wage)

The University of Virginia launched the Virginia College Advising Corps (VCAC) in the fall of 2005 as a public service program to address the widening gap in college access for low income, first-generation, and underrepresented students. Our mission is to increase the number of these students entering and completing higher education.

The Corps places recent college graduates in high schools throughout the Commonwealth to work alongside school counselors on college and career readiness. These near-peer college advisers assist high school students and their families with college searches, essay writing, SAT/ACT prep, college applications, FAFSA completion, scholarship searches, college visits, and successfully transitioning to post-secondary education.

College advisers serve full-time in their placement sites for two years. They become mentors within the school setting and are often the key person providing encouragement for students to persist in their education beyond high-school. In 2022-2023, 55 advisers are serving 59 partner high schools. In 2023-2024, we anticipate having between 60 and 65 advisers serve over 60 partner high schools. Our service area is geographically diverse, including both rural and urban districts.

Our program became the model for the national College Advising Corps, now present in 14 states. VCAC is a joint venture of The University of Virginia and the College Advising Corps, and is an AmeriCorps program.

Responsibilities:
  • VCAC college advisers serve full-time in high schools across Virginia
  • Provide one-on-one admission and financial aid advising to any student or family seeking assistance, utilizing a "match & fit" framework.
  • Organize group events that encourage students and their families to consider, plan for, and apply to colleges and universities
  • Establish productive working relationships with principals, counselors, and teachers at assigned high school, as well as community-based organizations.
  • Effectively utilize tools and resources in pursuit of continuous improvement and outstanding service to students
  • Maintain expertise in postsecondary planning, including 2- and 4-year colleges, trade and technical options, workforce, and other opportunities.
  • Represent the University of Virginia, AmeriCorps, and the College Advising Corps

Candidates must have the ability and willingness to both (1) relocate to various locations across the Commonwealth and (2) work hours that coincide with a typical school day, including some night and weekend hours.

Annual Compensation includes:

$32,000 - $34,000 annual living allowance (final amount dependent on grant funding) for a July start date, paid bi-weekly

$6,895 Segal Education Award (AmeriCorps)

$4,937 Health Insurance included (approximate)

* For later start dates living allowance will be pro-rated.
